Reminder: Emergency Evacuation Relief Program Applications
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is reminding residents from Whatì and Fort Providence to apply for the Emergency Evacuation Relief Program (EERP).

The program provides $800 per adult and $400 per dependent under 18 years old to residents who left their community because of the recent evacuation orders. 
The fastest and easiest way to apply is through the online application portal.

Apply now for the 2025 Trapper Mentorship Program

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Trapper Mentorship Program. Started in 2022, this program helps NWT residents learn how to trap by pairing them with experienced trappers who teach them important skills.  Successful new trappers will get a starter kit worth about $1500, while mentors will receive $2000 to help cover their costs.

Have your say: Review of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is reviewing the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the “ATIPP Act”). 


The ATIPP Act gives individuals the right to access and correct their personal information that is held by GNWT departments and public bodies designated under the ATIPP Regulations and sets out when a GNWT department or other public body may collect, use, and disclose personal information. The ATIPP Act also provides for an independent review by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of decisions made under the Act. 

GNWT releases 2023-24 JK-12 performance report highlighting progress and challenges

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education System Performance Measures Technical Report for the 2023-24 school year. The report provides an overview of how the NWT education system is performing and helps education leaders, families, and the GNWT focus on improving student outcomes and well-being.

The 2023-24 report highlights areas of progress:

New Guidelines to build or renovate early learning and child care facilities

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released two new resources to support the planning and development of new licensed centre-based child care spaces across the territory. 

These resources are designed to assist current and prospective child care providers, including individuals, businesses, and organizations interested in entering the sector, as well as the contractors, developers, architects and consultants they may engage to build new facilities or renovate existing ones.  

Preliminary Results Released from the Healthcare System Sustainability Unit

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is releasing the first public deliverables from the Healthcare System Sustainability Unit (HCSS Unit). 

These results include a plain language summary of the Unit’s preliminary findings and the 2024–25 annual report on the Unit’s progress. Both documents are available on the GNWT’s Healthcare System Sustainability webpage.

GNWT Announces New ‘NWT Community Planning Framework: Where We Live, Why We Plan’

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is announcing the release of the NWT Community Planning Framework – Where We Live, Why We Plan. The framework serves as a departmental platform and strategic approach to promoting the community planning system in the Northwest Territories. It highlights the important role of community governments, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), and professional community planners in supporting the development of the land management tools, including community plans, zoning bylaws, and community land use plans.

GNWT Announces Appointment of New Public Board of Directors for NTPC and NT Hydro

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new public Board of Directors for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and NT Hydro. As a Crown corporation, NTPC operates at arm’s length from the GNWT and will be guided by a ministerial letter outlining expectations and responsibilities. This transition marks an important step in strengthening governance and ensuring that oversight of the territory’s electricity system reflects the public interest.
