GNWT releases 2024-2025 Indigenous Employment Plan results

Today, the Minister of Finance tabled the Indigenous Employment Plan Results Report in the Legislative Assembly. The report highlights the Government of Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) efforts to increase Indigenous representation in its workforce and to improve hiring, training, and career development opportunities for Indigenous employees across the public service.

Dental equipment replacement and visiting services supported through new agreements

The Government of the Northwest Territories is taking steps to resume dental services in communities by improving the safety and readiness of dental equipment in health centres and confirming contracts for visiting dental service providers in several locations.

A new three-year agreement with Health Canada under the federal Oral Health Access Fund provides over $3 million to assess, repair, and replace aging dental equipment in community health centres across the territory.  The agreement took effect on April 1, 2026.

Have your say on the Corrections Regulations

Northwest Territories residents are invited to provide feedback on proposed amendments to the Corrections Regulations under the NWT Corrections Act.

The Corrections Act and its Regulations have been in place since 2021 and establish how the NWT Corrections Service operate in the territory. Among other provisions, the Regulations limit the direct supervision of female inmates by male staff members. After four years of implementation, these requirements have created significant staffing and operational pressures within territorial correctional facilities.

GNWT releases Cancer Care Vision to guide cancer care across the Northwest Territories

The Government of the Northwest Territories has released the Cancer Care Vision: A Living Framework for Quality and Priorities in the Northwest Territories (the Vision). It is a guide that sets shared direction for how cancer care will be planned, coordinated, and improved over time.

Cancer affects individuals, families, and communities across the NWT. Many residents share similar challenges during their cancer journey, including long travel for care, navigating complex systems, and accessing care that is respectful, culturally safe, and responsive to their needs.

Twin Falls Territorial Park – Trail and Viewing Platform Closure

The Twin Falls Park Trail is closed due to erosion along the riverbank. This erosion creates a serious risk to the public. If you hope to visit the territorial parks in the area, please plan accordingly.

The Twin Falls Park Trail closure includes the entire 5 km riverside trail connecting:

  • Alexandra Falls Day Use Area
  • Louise Falls Campground
  • Escarpment Creek Camping Area

This trail is closed between these locations, meaning public access is restricted.

Minister Macdonald introduces Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act to support safe communities for Northerners

Jay Macdonald, Minister of Justice, issued the following statement today after the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act was introduced in the Legislative Assembly.

“Every Northerner deserves to feel safe in their home, in their neighbourhood, and in their community.

Today, as Minister of Justice, I introduced the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, also known as SCAN. This is an important step in our work to support safe communities for Northerners.

What We Heard Report: Public Safety Legislation

Public feedback on two proposed public safety laws, Civil Forfeiture and Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN), is now summarized and available through a What We Heard report.

Between October 27 and November 28, 2025, residents across the NWT shared their views through online and in-person meetings, written submissions, and two surveys. The engagement focused on gathering input on the proposed approaches, understanding community concerns, and identifying the safeguards and features that matter most to NWT residents.
