The Geographical and Community Place Names Policy needs your input. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is updating this policy to enhance the role of Indigenous governments and the public in naming decisions. The policy was last updated in 1997 and no longer reflects how the GNWT works with Indigenous governments and the public.

Yellowknife Airport Security Exercise

Yellowknife Airport will be conducting a live security exercise on December 9, 2025, as part of our commitment to safety and emergency preparedness.

In accordance with the Canadian Aviation Security Regulations, aerodrome operators are required to conduct a live security exercise at least once every two years. This exercise is designed to test the effectiveness of the airport’s emergency plan in response to an act of unlawful interference with civil aviation.

Minister Caitlin Cleveland announces proactive measures to protect drinking water safety in NWT schools

Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Caitlin Cleveland issued the following statement today in response to the latest drinking water test results from NWT schools:

“As a parent, a lifelong resident of the Northwest Territories, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, I remain deeply concerned by the test results showing elevated lead levels in drinking water fixtures at schools in our territory.

Drinking Water Safety Update for Mildred Hall School

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has received lead testing results for Mildred Hall School in Yellowknife. Testing has confirmed that some drinking water fixtures show lead levels above the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) set out in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. As a result, the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) has issued a Public Health Order for the school.

Scheduled Telecommunications Maintenance May Impact 9-1-1 and Other Services in Gamètì.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is advising residents of Gamètì that Northwestel will be conducting planned network maintenance on Friday, December 05, 2025, between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. (MST).

During this maintenance window, some services may be disrupted for up to one hour. This disruption may impact local and long-distance telephone calling, 9-1-1, cellular and internet services.

Yellowknife Shelter Services Transition to Housing NWT

Housing NWT and the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) are sharing an important update. Effective April 1, 2026, Housing NWT will assume operational responsibility for the Yellowknife Day Shelter and Sobering Centre. NTHSSA currently manages these shelters.

This change is part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) plan to have a more coordinated approach to homelessness across the Northwest Territories (NWT). Housing NWT already manages shelter services in other regions across the NWT.
