Call for Nominations for the Education Hall of Fame

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting nominations for the Education Hall of Fame for induction in June 2023.

The Education Hall of Fame provides lasting recognition and gratitude towards those who have provided exemplary service or made a lasting impression to the field of education in the Northwest Territories.

Residents are encouraged to nominate an individual, team or organization in one of the five new awards categories: Community Outreach, Early Childhood, JK-12,
Post-Secondary, and Leadership.

Have Your Say on draft Homelessness Strategy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released a draft Homelessness Strategy, titled A Way Home: A Comprehensive Strategy to Address Homelessness in the Northwest Territories, and is seeking feedback from the public.

Addressing ongoing housing issues across the Northwest Territories (NWT) has been and remains a key mandate priority of the GNWT. While the GNWT currently provides safe housing options for those in need of assistance through shelters and multiple programs, homelessness remains a reality experienced by far too many residents.

Elder Abuse Awareness campaign launched

The Government of the Northwest Territories has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about Elder abuse and neglect.

You have a Right to be Safe in Your Home and in Your Community is the first stage of a broader campaign to create awareness and understanding of Elder abuse, contributing factors, and how to prevent and stop it.

A poster and fact sheet have been developed to share information on the different types of abuse Elders can experience, including financial, psychological, physical and sexual abuse, and neglect.

Have your say on Jean Marie River/Redknife River projects

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is inviting residents to provide feedback on two highway infrastructure projects: the replacement of the Jean Marie River bridge and the removal of existing culverts and new bridge construction at Redknife River.

The Jean Marie River Bridge – located on highway 1 approximately 65 km south of Fort Simpson – requires replacement as it is reaching the end of its life cycle.

Large spill within Diavik containment pond; no release into the environment

Diavik Diamond Mine (March 21, 2023) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has been made aware of a “mine-impacted water” spill at the Diavik Diamond Mine, located 300km northeast of Yellowknife.

Diavik reported a spill of 450,000 cubic metres of water used in mining operations on March 16th, 2023. The spill was caused by breakage in a pipeline which transports mine-impacted water.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released its latest Social Indicators COVID-19 Pandemic report. The report examines the potential social impacts of health measures taken to protect against COVID-19.
