Have your say: Proposed Changes to the Waste Reduction and Recovery Act

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proposing changes to the Waste Reduction and Recovery Act with one further round of engagements planned.

The proposed changes were developed after more than a year of broad engagement with communities, stakeholders, and the public while developing the Waste Resource Management Strategy and Action Plan, released in 2019.

Funding for beaver castors returns

Harvesters and trappers are once again able to capitalize on the demand for beaver castors in the global market with funding made available through the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT).

Last spring, beaver castors were added to the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur program. Due to the success of the initial funding opportunity, the GNWT is offering funding once again. Trappers can be advanced $65 for each pound of dried beaver castors, or approximately eight dried castors.

Addictions Recovery Peer Support Fund

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) continues to accept applications for the Addictions Recovery Peer Support Fund.

The Addictions Recovery Peer Support Fund helps eligible organizations provide their own peer support programs, groups, and/or activities specific to addictions recovery and harm reduction approaches. There are two funding options and a total of $230,000 in funding available.

GNWT increases fuel prices in 10 NWT communities to reflect rising global fuel prices

Retail fuel prices in 10 NWT communities have been increased by the Government of the Northwest Territories, effective today.

These price adjustments are entirely the result of market volatility and global increases in the cost of petroleum products, as well as associated increased freight costs. None of the additional costs associated with the Sachs Harbour air resupply following the cancelled marine resupply in October are included in these price changes.

National Addictions Awareness Week

National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) takes place across Canada every year during the third week of November. National Addictions Awareness Week is an important opportunity to focus on the risks associated with alcohol and other drugs and share information about prevention and recovery.  This year, the theme is A Community of Caring, focusing on the ways communities in Canada are supporting people who use substances or are living with a substance use disorder.

Applications still open for Addictions Recovery and Aftercare Fund

The Government of Northwest Territories continues to accept applications for the Addictions Recovery and Aftercare Fund.

The Addictions Recovery and Aftercare fund provides funding to Indigenous Governments and community organizations so they can hire community-based counsellors to support individuals living in recovery from addictions. This funding also supports community-based addictions recovery and aftercare programming.

Have your say: Climate Change and You

The Northwest Territories (NWT) needs to adopt actions to address climate change and getting there means understanding how residents and communities are experiencing the north’s changing climate today.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is launching a survey to collect NWT residents’ experiences of climate change and their key concerns, to better understand how we can collectively build climate resilience in the NWT.
