Teacher Education Program

December 14, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment supports community-based teacher education programming, which provides increased access to students across the Northwest Territories. Graduates of these programs will increase the number of Aboriginal educators in our school system.

Student Financial Assistance Review

December 12, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories Student Financial Assistance program last underwent a substantial redesign in the fall of 2000.  Since then, it has periodically been reviewed internally, resulting in increases to some benefits, such as tuition and book allowances, repayable loan monthly limits and the lifetime loan limit.

Reading Flash Mob!

September 28, 2011 - An odd mob of readers suddenly appeared outside the Greenstone Building for Yellowknife’s first ever Reading Flash Mob to celebrate NWT Literacy Week.

Readers, ranging from a daycare class of 4 and 5 year olds to office workers, public servants and passing pedestrians read with linked arms in front of the Greenstone Building to demonstrate their passion for reading.

Northwest Territories Recipients Honoured During Literacy Week

September 27, 2011 - Recipients of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award and the Ministerial Literacy Awards, including a Youth Learner Literacy Award were honoured today during an Adult Learners’ Luncheon in Yellowknife.

Sylvia Clement - Council of the Federation Literacy Award is given to an adult learner has overcome obstacles and demonstrated outstanding progress in the pursuit of literacy skills in any of the NWT official languages.

Geological Resources Release

September 23, 2011 - The Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the NWT Mining Heritage Society invite all media to attend the official release of the geological resource, Geological Journey I. The DVDs and teacher support material will be made available to all schools in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to benefit students from Kindergarten to grade 12.
