YELLOWKNIFE (February 4, 2016) – Wolverine, arctic, cross and red fox furs, many harvested in the Northwest Territories (NWT), sold out at the season opening sale of wild fur held January 25 in North Bay, Ontario. 

YELLOWKNIFE (November 19, 2015) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has acquired the leasehold interests for both the Northwest Territories and Yukon mineral rights to North American Tungsten Company Limited’s (NATCL) Mactung property.

YELLOWKNIFE (October 22, 2015) – The  Tłı̨chǫ Government has advised the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) of its decision to not harvest the Bathurst Caribou herd for the 2015/16 hunting season.

“We applaud the Tłı̨chǫ Government for showing strong leadership in dealing with this crisis,” said J. Michael Miltenberger, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources. “It is a very tough choice that recognizes the need for strong actions to conserve the Bathurst herd for current and future generations.”

VANCOUVER – B.C. (October 15, 2015) Environment Minister Mary Polak and Northwest Territories Environment and Natural Resources Minister J. Michael Miltenberger signed an agreement today committing both governments to co-operatively manage water in the Mackenzie River Basin.

Through the British Columbia and Northwest Territories Bilateral Water Management Agreement, which focuses on the Liard and Petitot watersheds, both governments are committing to protecting the ecosystems within the basin, as well as the interests of all citizens, including First Nations.

Mr. Speaker, it is with great pleasure that I rise today to advise Members of this Assembly that our Government will be signing a Transboundary Water Management Agreement with British Columbia for the shared waters of the Liard and Petitot Basins.

This Agreement, the second one to be signed with an upstream jurisdiction this year, is another step in ensuring the waters of the Northwest Territories remain clean, abundant and productive for all time. 

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, or ENR, Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020. This Strategic Plan, which will be tabled later today, establishes a vision, mission, values, goals, and objectives for the Department. The Strategic Plan incorporates the new responsibilities of ENR post- Devolution.

The 2015-2020 ENR Strategic Plan aligns with government policies, including the ENR Establishment Policy, and the GNWT Sustainable Development Policy and the Land Use and Sustainability Framework.

Mr. Speaker, it isn’t very often we can say that weather forecasters were spot-on with their projections, however this fire season it seems they got it right. 

YELLOWKNIFE (September 28, 2015) –  Population surveys completed this summer on  the Bluenose East, Bluenose West, Bathurst, Cape Bathurst and Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula barren-ground caribou herds in the Northwest Territories indicate the herds continue to decline.

YELLOWKNIFE (September 3, 2015) – The public is asked to refrain from using the Cameron Falls Trail and parking lot that are located in Hidden Lake Territorial Park until further notice due to bear sightings in the area. Hidden Lake Park is on the Ingraham Trail approximately 47 km east of Yellowknife.

A temporary blockade is restricting access to the Hidden Lake Territorial Park parking lot to ensure public safety at this time.

La prochaine mise à jour de sécurité publique sera émise le vendredi 21 août 2015, à moins que l’incendie autour du lac Reid prenne sérieusement de l’ampleur entre-temps.
