Mr. Speaker, I rise today to again update this House on some of the work our government is doing to further enhance public engagement and transparency. When I last updated Members in early November, I announced that I would soon be engaging directly with NWT residents about open government. I also committed to provide this House with an update.
YELLOWKNIFE (February 24, 2017) – The Minister Responsible for the Public Utilities Board (PUB), Glen Abernethy, today announced that the Executive Council of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) issued policy direction on electricity rate setting to the Board. The direction reinforces long standing policy for government customers to pay more for electricity to keep rates lower for residential and small business customers.
YELLOWKNIFE (January 31, 2017) — Flags of the Northwest Territories on all Government of the Northwest Territories’ buildings will be flown at half-mast effective immediately until further notice to mark the tragic events that took place in the City of Québec. You may wish to consider following suit.
The federal Department of Canadian Heritage has advised that the Canadian flag on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada, including the Peace Tower in Ottawa, will also be flown at half-mast.
YELLOWKNIFE (November 4, 2016) – As part of its commitment to improve openness and transparency, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched a new mandate reporting website where the public will be able to track the government’s progress on fulfilling the Mandate of the Government of the Northwest Territories.
The website will allow residents to see up-to-date progress on each commitment under the five major themes of the Mandate.
Mr. Speaker, openness and transparency are fundamental principles of democracy that contribute to government accountability.
These principles underpin our debates and discussions here in this House, where government plans, policies and budgets are presented for examination and approval by the public’s elected representatives. Every day during Session, Members ask Ministers to explain government proposals, decisions and actions in a public forum open to anybody who wants to attend or watch our proceedings on television.
YELLOWKNIFE (September 19, 2016) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working on organizational restructuring proposals as part of ongoing efforts to ensure it remains on a fiscally sustainable path for the future. Proposals include the amalgamation of the departments of Public Works and Services (PWS) and Transportation (DOT) into a single infrastructure department and the merging of corporate services functions currently carried out by the departments of Executive, Finance, Human Resources, and Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations.
HAY RIVER (September 8, 2016) – Premier Bob McLeod and the entire Cabinet met residents of Hay River during an open house held in Hay River last Thursday, September 1, 2016. The open house was preceded by a public meeting of the Environment and Economy Committee of Cabinet (COC) chaired by Minister Wally Schumann.
