Good afternoon, Board members, staff and members of the Native Women’s Association of the Northwest Territories.

It’s good to be here. I had the pleasure of meeting many of you at the Christmas supper.

As a Métis woman, I want to share how deeply I appreciate all of the work you do on behalf of Indigenous women across the NWT.

Ministerial Meetings and Travel Expenses for December 2017

YELLOWKNIFE (January 11, 2018) – As part of its ongoing commitment to increase accountability and transparency, the Government of the Northwest Territories launched the Public Engagement and Transparency website in the spring of 2017. This website responds to direction in the mandate of the Minister of Public Engagement and Transparency to promote awareness about information on government accountability.

Caroline Cochrane: National Day of Remembrance and Action Vigil

Welcome everyone, this evening we gather together to mark this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. 

I would like to thank the Status of Women Council, the Public Service Alliance of Canada North - NWT Regional Women's Committee, and the Northern Territories Federation of Labour for working collaboratively to organize this event tonight. 

GNWT and NWT Seniors’ Society partner to improve seniors’ programs and services

YELLOWKNIFE (November 29, 2017) – Minister Responsible for Seniors Glen Abernethy and NWT Seniors’ Society Past President Leon Peterson announced a new partnership today to develop a report card on Government of the Territories (GNWT) programs and services for seniors. The report card will be an opportunity to inventory and assess the effectiveness of GNWT programs and services either designed for or accessed by seniors, determine how well they are meeting seniors’ needs  and identify areas for potential improvement or better coordination.

Caroline Cochrane: Family Violence Awareness Week

Mr. Speaker, this week is Family Violence Awareness Week in the Northwest Territories. The theme this year is “Healthy Relationships, Healthy Communication.” There are events occurring across the Northwest Territories between October 16th and October 22nd to bring attention to family violence and promote healthier ways for people to deal with conflict.

9th Intergovernmental Meeting between Tłįchǫ Government and GNWT

YELLOWKNIFE (October 12, 2017) – Premier Bob McLeod, Minister Wally Schumann, Minister Robert C. McLeod, Minister Caroline Cochrane, Minister Alfred Moses and Minister Louis Sebert met with the Tłįchǫ Government, Grand Chief George Mackenzie, Chief Clifford Daniels, Chief David Wedawin, Chief Charlie Football and Chief Alfonz Nitsiza in Yellowknife on Wednesday. 

Robert C. McLeod: Orange Shirt Day

Mr. Speaker, since 2013, September 30th has been marked as Orange Shirt Day, a day for all Canadians to remember the survivors of the residential school system.

Organizers chose an orange shirt as the symbol for that day based on a story told by Phyllis Jack Webstat, a survivor of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. In her story, Ms. Webstat tells of having the shiny, new orange shirt her grandmother had given to her being taken away on her first day at residential school.

People are our number one priority, say territorial Premiers in new vision for sustainable development

YELLOWKNIFE, NT /WHITEHORSE, YT/IQALUIT, NU (September 22, 2017) – Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod, Yukon Premier Sandy Silver and Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna today released the Pan-Territorial Vision for Sustainable Development. In it, they declare that residents of the territories deserve the opportunity to achieve the same aspirations for themselves and their families as other Canadians – including good health, high-quality education and sustainable middle class jobs.
