The Honourable Robert R. McLeod Premier of the Northwest Territories at Talston Announcement

Good afternoon and thank-you, for being here today.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome Minister LeBlanc and his team to the Northwest Territories.

As Minister Leblanc mentioned, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Government of Canada have a special relationship.

It is important to any jurisdiction to have good partnerships with Canada, and particularly for the NWT, your commitment to work with us to address the issues that affect Northerners are essential and we look forward to many more visits in the future.

Intergovernmental Meeting between Tłı̨chǫ Government and Government of the Northwest Territories

Premier Bob McLeod, Minister Wally Schumann,  Minister Alfred Moses,  Minister Caroline Cochrane, Minister R.C. McLeod and Minister Louis Sebert met with the Tłı̨chǫ Government Grand Chief George Mackenzie, Chief Clifford Daniels, Chief David Wedawin, Chief Charlie Football, and Chief Alfonz Nitsiza in Yellowknife on Thursday, December 13th, 2018.

The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest, including:

Caroline Cochrane: Family Violence Awareness Week

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to acknowledge Family Violence Awareness Week.  This week is recognized across the country, and takes place from October 21 to 27, 2018.

Statistics Canada reports that, in 2016, family violence accounted for one-quarter of all violent crimes.  These are criminal acts perpetrated against the most vulnerable members of society: youth, seniors, women and girls.  In 2016, two thirds of all victims of family violence were women and girls.

Caroline Cochrane: International Day of the Girl

Check Against Delivery

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to acknowledge the International Day of the Girl Child. Plan International Canada, with all-party support from the Canadian Parliament, led global efforts to recognize this day.  Their actions resulted in October 11th being recognized by the United Nations for the first time in 2012 as a day to champion the empowerment and rights of girls around the world.  This is a powerful accomplishment, and I am extremely proud of our country’s leadership in this effort.
