INUVIK (May 12, 2017) – Today, Caroline Cochrane, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, presented the 2017 Northwest Territories Outstanding Volunteer Awards during a ceremony in Inuvik.  These annual awards provide an opportunity to show our appreciation to volunteers and volunteer organizations for their outstanding contributions in communities across the territory.

Recipients of the 2017 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards are:

YELLOWKNIFE (May 8, 2017) - On May 10^th, 2017 at 1:55 PM, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will issue a live test of NWT Alert Ready, the Northwest Territories public alerting system. Residents may see and hear the public alert test on radio stations and cable networks across the NWT.

YELLOWKNIFE (April 24, 2017) - Today, the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), Caroline Cochrane, announced the annual call for applications for the 2017 NGO Stabilization Fund.

The NGO Stabilization Fund provides special funding to help NGOs that deliver critical GNWT-funded programs or services to the public to stabilize or develop their capacity to manage programs and services.

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs was recently the subject of a Performance Audit conducted by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. The audit assessed the Department’s performance as it relates to supporting community governments with the provision of essential services to residents.

Mr. Speaker, I am very proud of the work that the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs has done as part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ commitment to education, training and youth development. Today, I would like to provide an update on the progress the Department is making in the area of governance capacity building and support for community governments in the Norwest Territories.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to provide an update on plans to move the operations of the Western Canada Lottery Program within government and the Department of Municipal and Community Affair’s response to the Sutcliffe Report.

Mr. Speaker, this government has heard that the people of the Northwest Territories want 9-1-1 and we have listened to them. In his budget address, the Minister of Finance announced that this government plans to implement a territorial-9-1-1 program. Today, I wish to take this opportunity to expand on this important announcement.

This year marks the 26^th year of this award, which recognizes and celebrates the remarkable contributions volunteers make in communities across the NWT.
