Mr. Speaker, whether a business is small or large, having a safe and healthy workplace is crucial for success.
I am pleased to inform the House today that the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission is now accepting applications for a new Youth Safety Leadership Program.
This is an opportunity for young workers aged between 14 and 24 in the Northwest Territories to develop as safety leaders within their communities and build skills that could lead to a rewarding career in workplace health and safety.

Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission, called Safe Workplace. Launched this year in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, Safe Workplace is a health and safety program that recognizes employers for their workplace safety performance and helps others identify areas to improve.
Mr. Speaker, today I wish to provide an update on some of the service improvements, including the financial relief measures the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Madam Speaker, I would like to highlight some of the work the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission is doing to support employers and workers in the Northwest Territories during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Premier Cochrane and Minister Nokleby issued the following joint statement on working in partnership with Members of the Legislative Assembly on behalf of all residents of the Northwest Territories:
“The 19th Legislative Assembly is still a new government, with many new Members. It takes time for people to learn to work together effectively in new roles, and all Members of the Legislative Assembly were still in the process of figuring that out when COVID-19 hit.

The Public Health Order issued from the NWT Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) on May 17, 2019 for the Hay River Mackenzie Place Apartment building continues to remain in place to protect individuals from potential health hazards.
Immediately after the fire at the apartment building on March 15, 2019, the building was evacuated and closed. The building has remained closed due to the confirmed presence of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead, and mercury. Water damaged materials have supported the growth of mould, which presents an additional hazard.
Mr. Speaker, the Mine Rescue Competition has a strong history in the Northwest Territories. The first event took place in 1957, and the competition has been growing every year.
This weekend marks the 62nd Annual Mine Rescue Competition. Teams will come together from mines all across the Territories to test their skills.
