Diane Archie: Airport Capital Assistance Program

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, NWT airports are critical to the economic and social well-being of NWT residents. They help to connect communities and families throughout the territory and across the country. Today I am pleased to give you an update on two projects which have been funded by the Government of Canada’s Airport Capital Assistance Program. These projects are very important to the Department of Infrastructure and to residents as they will help to improve safety at NWT airports.

Red Cross opens online portal for donations from the NWT

Northwest Territories residents can now donate to the humanitarian effort in Ukraine through the recently-launched Red Cross portal.

Premier Caroline Cochrane delivered a statement in the Legislative Assembly on February 25 on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and committed the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to match donations to the Red Cross from NWT residents up to $50,000.

Julie Green: Strengthening Mental Wellness and Addiction Recovery

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, mental health and addictions continues to be a serious issue in the NWT, which is why this government has committed to increasing the number and variety of culturally respectful, community-based, mental health and addictions programs, including aftercare. I rise today to update Members on the work to meet this mandate commitment.

Shane Thompson: Harvest with Respect

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, as the weather warms, we are seeing more hunters heading out on the land, including many who are traveling up the winter road to harvest caribou. Most are harvesting safely, respectfully, and following traditional practices.

Unfortunately, a few hunters’ illegal and disrespectful harvesting puts unnecessary pressure on barren-ground caribou herds. These herds are already facing challenges related to the changing climate which can impact their habitat and food sources.

Julie Green: Cultural Safety Update

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, eliminating anti-Indigenous racism in the Health and Social Services system is an urgent issue in the Northwest Territories, and across the country. I rise today to reaffirm our government’s commitment to advancing cultural safety for Indigenous residents. This is a commitment we will continue to act on and today I will provide an update on the progress we have made over the past year.

Have Your Say on GNWT Conservation Planning for the Next Five Years

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) is gathering public feedback on how the GNWT works to protect the land, water, wildlife, and traditions of the Northwest Territories.

Protecting biodiversity through the establishment and management of a conservation network is a priority of this government and the GNWT’s approach to conservation planning is guided by Healthy Land, Healthy People: GNWT Priorities for Advancement of Conservation Network Planning 2016-2021 (HLHP).

Applications Open for 2022-2023 NWT Mining Incentive Program

The Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) is accepting applications for the 2022-2023 Northwest Territories (NWT) Mining Incentive Program (MIP).  The NWT MIP provides funding support to prospectors and exploration companies that propose a new exploration project or are already carrying out NWT mineral exploration work.

Changes made to the MIP to offset the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on NWT mineral exploration will remain in place for the upcoming year.

These changes include:

Paulie Chinna: Housing Delivery Status Update

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation is delivering an exceptionally large capital program to cost share the delivery of 60 new single public housing units. Forty-six of those units are projected to be completed in 2022-2023, and 14 are projected to be completed the following year.
