The Arctic Bioenergy Summit and Tour: Sustainable Bioenergy for Northern Communities: Reliable. Affordable. Local. starts today in Yellowknife and runs until January 28.

Hosted by the Arctic Energy Alliance and the Wood Pellet Association of Canada, this in-person event replaces the 2026 edition of the Northwest Territories Biomass Week and brings together energy leaders, policymakers, and practitioners from across Canada to explore sustainable bioenergy solutions for northern and remote communities.

Housing NWT Signs Memorandum of Agreement on Housing with Acho Dene Koe First Nation to Strengthen Partnership and Improve Housing Planning in Echaot’l Koe

The Acho Dene Koe First Nation (ADK FN) Chief Eugene Hope and Minister Responsible for Housing Northwest Territories (Housing NWT) Honourable Lucy Kuptana have signed a Memorandum of Agreement on housing between ADK FN and the Government of the Northwest Territories.

This Memorandum of Agreement formalizes cooperation between Housing NWT and ADK FN. This agreement builds on past partnerships to guide joint work on housing priorities. 

New data products announced at Roundup strengthen mineral exploration in NWT

Two new, high-value data products are now available through the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS), offering a level of information that has never been accessible in the Northwest Territories. The Permafrost Database Project and the Pine Point Geophysical Survey will directly support mineral exploration, research and land-use planning across the territory.

AME Roundup attendees are invited to connect with NTGS staff at the NWT booth on the tradeshow floor for demonstrations of the new datasets and to learn more about how they can be used to advance exploration.

Government of Northwest Territories clarifies role on Federal Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has clarified its role in relation to the federal Assault‑Style Firearms Compensation Program (the buyback program). The program will be administered by the Government of Canada in the Northwest Territories. The GNWT's priority remains focused on community safety and effective policing.

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today on the election of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation Chair:

“On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I congratulate Erwin Elias on his election as Chair of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation.

Mr. Elias has proven leadership experience and a strong connection to his community, and I wish him every success as he takes on this role. I have had a positive working relationship with Mr. Elias in the past and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new capacity as Chair.

GNWT and NWT Council of Leaders host summit to discuss primary health care reform

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the NWT Council of Leaders are hosting a three-day summit in Yellowknife from January 20 to 22, 2026. The event, Following the North Star: Primary Health Care Reimagined Together, will bring together Indigenous governments, health system leaders, and national experts to share lessons and explore promising models of care.

Residents across the Northwest Territories are invited to share their perspectives on mental wellness and addictions recovery services. Your feedback will help improve access, equity, and culturally safe supports for people and families across the NWT.

The survey runs until April 24, 2026 and is open to everyone, regardless of whether you’ve accessed these services directly. Residents can respond as a direct user of these services, or on behalf of a child, dependent, or someone they support as a service provider.

This series features powerful stories from Indigenous caregivers, Elders and community members, highlighting traditions such as Custom Adoption, shared caregiving and community-led support. These practices are rooted in culture and belonging which are essential to the wellbeing of children and families

GNWT launches AI Scribe pilot to support patient care with strong privacy safeguards

Health and Social Services providers in select primary care and community health settings across the Northwest Territories are beginning to use Mika AI Scribe, a new tool that creates draft clinical notes during patient visits. This one-year pilot, in partnership with all three Health and Social Services Authorities, is designed to help providers spend more time on patient care and less on paperwork, while maintaining strong privacy and consent protections.
