Historic Joining of Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway Construction

April 8, 2016      Inuvik, Northwest Territories

The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories are pleased to announce the joining of the north and south construction spreads of the Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway, the first public highway to Canada’s Arctic coast. The contractor has successfully joined the two construction spreads with a first layer of embankment material placed on April 7, 2016. Geotextile fabric and additional earthworks to bring the embankment up to grade will be put in place by the end the month.

Commitees-of-Cabinet Contribute to GNWT decision making

YELLOWKNIFE (April 6, 2016) – Terms of reference for eight Committees-of-Cabinet (COCs) have been approved by the Executive Council.

Each COC is mandated to provide an interdepartmental focus to identify issues, track efforts, coordinate policy and offer recommendations to the Executive Council or Financial Management Board in its defined areas of responsibility.

3rd Anti-Poverty Roundtable wraps up

YELLOWKNIFE (March 31, 2016) - Representatives from the GNWT, Aboriginal governments, communities, non-government organizations and businesses met in Yellowknife this week to continue collaborative efforts to identify and implement effective solutions to combat poverty in the Northwest Territories. They shared success stories, provided updates and set shared priorities for the coming year.

GNWT Pleased with increase to the Northern Residents' Deduction

Yellowknife (March 24, 2016) – Minister of Finance Robert C. McLeod announced today that the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased with the Government of Canada’s decision, announced in yesterday’s federal budget, to increase the Northern Residents’ Deduction by 33%.

Northwest Territories filmmaker receives national attention

TORONTO (March 23, 2016)One of the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) own will be thrust into the limelight this evening.

NWT filmmaker Jen Walden’s short film Painted Girl will be featured in this year’s Women in Film and Television - Toronto Showcase — an event recognizing and celebrating female talent in the film and television industry organized by Women in Film and Television – Toronto (WIFT-T).

Walden wrote, directed, and produced the feature on her own.

Tourism visitation and spending numbers released

YELLOWKNIFE ( March 21, 2016)Statistics today released confirm one of the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) most important growth industries proved resilient in a difficult financial climate.

The 2014-2015 tourism results were collected from a comprehensive survey completed every four years by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Tourism and Parks division, providing benchmarks for a wide range of variables, including spending, trip characteristics and travel motivations.

Government of Canada and the Northwest Territories announce joint-funding for infrastructure projects

YELLOWKNIFE (March 16, 2016) - Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, today announced funding for 13 projects for municipalities in the Northwest Territories under the Government of Canada’s Small Communities Fund. MP McLeod was joined by Robert McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs for the Northwest Territories.

The Government of Canada remains committed to making historic investments in infrastructure to promote good jobs and clean growth in towns and cities across the country.
