First Northwest Territories species at risk recovery strategy released

YELLOWKNIFE (March 11, 2016) – The first recovery strategy for a threatened species in the Northwest Territories (NWT) was released this week.

The hairy braya is a rare flowering plant found only on the Cape Bathurst Peninsula and Baillie Island, NWT in the Inuvialuit Settlement Area.

This action fulfills Government of the Northwest Territories responsibilities under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act and follows independent assessments completed by the NTW Species at Risk Committee and a consensus agreement the Conference of Management Authorities.

Workshop enhances Northwest Territories tourism capacity

YELLOWKNIFE (March 11, 2016) — A packed house of delegates left an energetic presentation with new knowledge on how to supercharge community tourism offerings in the Northwest Territories (NWT) this week.

From March 8 to 10, the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) funded and facilitated the Engaging Community Tourism Champions workshop at the Explorer Hotel.

Northwest Territories to develop homegrown mining regulations

YELLOWKNIFE (March 10, 2016)—The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) today announced major modernization initiatives for the mining and exploration sector.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) will begin the process of developing and proposing a new, leading edge Mineral Resources Act to address the NWT’s unique regulatory needs while becoming more responsive to evolving industrial environments.

Annual film screening tour returns to NWT communities

YELLOWKNIFE (March 3, 2016) — A Yellowknife-based organization will spread the love of film to communities across the Northwest Territories (NWT) this March.

The Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) Road Tour — an annual event coordinated by Western Arctic Moving Pictures (WAMP) — will screen NWT and Yukon-produced films alongside select international features in each region of the NWT.

Hay River Airport Receives Snow-clearing Equipment Worth Half a Million Dollars

YELLOWKNIFE (March 3, 2016) – As a result of a successful partnership between the Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Government of Canada, a new state of the art, self-propelled snowblower is now on site at the Hay River Merlyn Carter Airport. 

The new snowblower employs cutting edge technology to increase productivity and decrease time required to clean airport runways, improve worker safety, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

GNWT releases review of revenue options

YELLOWKNIFE (March 1, 2016) – Minister of Finance Robert C. McLeod tabled a review of revenue options for the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) in the Legislative Assembly today.

The review considers the feasibility of raising additional revenues to help fund rising government expenditures. Revenue sources considered include: taxes on individuals and businesses; other taxes like fuel, tobacco and property taxes, school levies and liquor markups; fees and charges; and resource revenues.
