North Slave Resiliency Study tabled

YELLOWKNIFE (June 8, 2016) – Minister of Public Works and Services Caroline Cochrane tabled the North Slave Resiliency Study during today’s sitting of the Legislative Assembly.

The study was undertaken in response to a commitment in the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Mandate to better use our existing hydroelectric resources by exploring options to respond to low water in the North Slave hydroelectric power system.

Tourism Business Mentorship Partners Announced

YELLOWKNFE (June 2, 2016) — The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is partnering with the Canadian Executive Services Organization (CESO)  to bring exciting new mentorship opportunities in the tourism sector.

CESO and Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) have reached an agreement which will see CESO take on frontline delivery of the Tourism Business Mentorship Program, executed through their roster of Volunteer Advisors.

Finance Minister Robert C. McLeod releases 2016-2017 territorial budget

YELLOWKNIFE (June 1, 2016) – Finance Minister Robert C. McLeod released the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) 2016-2017 Budget today, highlighting $35 million in new spending on initiatives related to the priorities of the 18th Legislative Assembly.

The $1.6 billion budget reflects the GNWT’s commitment to protecting spending on core social programs, with $1 billion of the overall budget allocated to the programs and services NWT residents rely on each day.

Minister of Lands approves Environmental Assessment of Jay Pipe expansion

YELLOWKNIFE (May 20, 2016) – Minister of Lands Robert C. McLeod announced today that, he with the concurrence of the other four responsible Territorial and Federal ministers, has accepted the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board's Report of Environmental Assessment for the Jay Pipe expansion. Dominion Diamond Ekati Corporation can now proceed to the regulatory permitting phase with the Project.

Yellowknife area recreation management planning beginning this summer

YELLOWKNIFE (May 18, 2016) The Government of the Northwest Territories is asking for your participation in developing a recreation management plan for the Yellowknife periphery area.

This work builds on previous public engagements and surveys completed as part of the Recreational Land Management Framework development to date and will narrow in on Yellowknife area recreational opportunities and activities.

Tri-Party Memorandum of Understanding Signed in Support of NWT Community Governments

YELLOWKNIFE (May 17, 2016) The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), NWT Association of Communities (NWTAC),  and the Local Government Administrators of the NWT (LGANT), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed to improve collaborative support for community governments in the Northwest Territories.

Mineral Master Receives Industry Award

YELLOWKNIFE (May 13, 2016) — A transformative figure in the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) mining sector, who discovered the Snap Lake kimberlite deposit, received pan-territorial recognition yesterday.

Randy Turner, President and CEO of Canterra Minerals and Independence Gold, was awarded the Professional Award of Merit in Geosciences by the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG) for excellence in applied geology and geoscience in the NWT and Nunavut.

Northwest Territories Parks are now Open

YELLOWKNIFE (May 13, 2016) — Gates swung open at parks across the Northwest Territories (NWT) this morning marking the start of another spectacular season for outdoors enthusiasts from the territory and beyond.

Park users will notice some improvements in facilities this year, with $3.5 million in capital investment allocated to the NWT’s five regions by the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. 

GNWT to consider future governance options for NTPC

YELLOWKNIFE (May 11, 2016) – Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) Louis Sebert announced today that the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will examine options for the future governance of NTPC as part of its ongoing work to address the high cost of living in the NWT.

As a first step, Minister Sebert has revoked the appointments of the current NTPC Board of Directors effective May 24, 2016. In their place, the Minister will appoint a new board made up of GNWT Deputy Ministers.
