Mr. Speaker, as the Minister Responsible for Youth, I am proud to speak today about one of our most successful youth initiatives, the NWT Youth Ambassador Program.

From November 14^th to the 18^th of this year, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs hosted the NWT Youth Ambassador Program orientation and training event in Yellowknife. I was pleased to attend this orientation along with the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, the Honourable Ms. Chinna.

Le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) a annoncé aujourd’hui les noms d’immeubles à Fort Simpson, à Inuvik et à Yellowknife.

L’immeuble de bureaux situé au 9902, 98^e Avenue, à Fort Simpson, a été nommé immeuble Chief Baptiste Cazon en l’honneur de cet aîné respecté de Fort Simpson qui a été chef de la Première Nation Łíídlįį Kų́ę́ de 1955 à 1974.

Mr. Speaker, today there are increasing numbers of women leaders who are working at the local or regional level for the betterment of our communities. But only a handful of women have ever taken seats in this Legislative Assembly. 

Mr. Speaker, it’s time to change that.  Our governing bodies should be representative of the populations they serve, and women make up half of our population. We need more women in political leadership at all levels, but especially here in this House. 

Mr. Speaker, on June 4^th, I tabled the final report of the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in this House. The report, entitled Reclaiming Power and Place, outlines the systemic causes of the violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people in this country. The Inquiry’s report also presents 231 recommendations as Calls for Justice. 

Mr. Speaker, the 18^th Legislative Assembly has made it a priority to strengthen relationships with NWT Indigenous governments. We have focused on fostering government-to-government relationships, and advancing, finalizing and implementing land, resources and self-government agreements.  Together we have charted a vision for the economic future of the NWT, and we have come together to make the case for greater investment and decision making in our territory.

Caroline Cochrane, ministre responsable de la condition de la femme, au nom du gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO), a publié aujourd’hui Faire notre part – Réponse initiale à Réclamer notre pouvoir et notre place : le rapport final de l’Enquête nationale sur les femmes et les filles autochtones disparues et assassinées (la « réponse initiale »).

Mr. Speaker, international interest in the North has been increasing steadily over the past few years. As the effects of climate change increase access to the Arctic, the global geopolitical context for the region is changing.

With enormous untapped opportunities for shipping, research and resource development, many countries are looking to influence the development of policies and international agreements that will benefit them and their interests in the region.
