Aklavik

This fly-in community of about 600 residents was founded in 1912 as a Hudson’s Bay Company post and is the former regional administrative centre for the territorial government.   Community access is restricted to air, except during the winter when the community is connected to Inuvik by ice road. Every Spring, the community celebrates The Mad Trapper Spring Carnival; a carnival named after the infamous story of Aklavik’s Albert “The Mad Trapper” Johnson.

Moose Kerr is the community school with 160 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Classes are run by a staff of 14 teachers.

Health care is provided through a Community Health Centre.
