Almost 500 people live in the community of Whatì; one of four Tłı̨chǫ communities. The community is located near Lac La Martre, a fishing destination known for large pike and lake trout. The lake includes extensive marshlands that attract a variety of migratory and local birds and the community itself is known for its abundant wildlife. Whatì was initially established in 1773 with a Northwest Company trading post. Today, the community is accessible year round by air and by ice road in the winter.
Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 is taught at the Mezi Community School.
