In November 2017, the 1,000 residents of Tuktoyaktuk celebrated the opening of the all-weather road connecting their community to Inuvik and the Dempster Highway. Tuktoyaktuk is a northern base for caribou and beluga hunting, and is the home of Canada’s largest Pingo.
Tuktoyaktuk has been home to a DEW Line radar site and a centre for oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort Sea. With the addition of the all-weather road, Tuktoyaktuk is seeing a large rise in tourism.
Mangilaluk School offers classes from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. There is also an Aurora College Learning Centre.
