GNWT releases NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework

Minister Responsible for Seniors, Julie Green, released the NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework today. The Strategic Framework provides a foundation for improving programs, services, and initiatives for seniors to better meet their needs.

The development of the NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework involved a comprehensive process, including  a literature review, analysis of statistical data and engagement with seniors, their caregivers and families, non-government organizations, as well as community and Indigenous Governments.

Progress Update on the Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan

The Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan is producing results since it was released in February this year. The Work Plan identifies 24 action items to continue the work of building a strong continuum of coordinated and easily accessible addictions supports for residents. It responds to recommendations by the Auditor General of Canada delivered in 2022.

To date 29% of the action items in the Work Plan have been completed.

September is FASD Awareness Month - Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together

Yellowknife (September 12, 2023) - September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness month, a time dedicated to conversation about FASD, improving prevention, and supporting those living with FASD. The theme for this year’s FASD awareness month is Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together.

Northwest Territories Wildfire Update

Media is invited to receive an update on the wildfire situation in the Northwest Territories, the ongoing response to the wildfires, and resulting evacuations.

Premier Caroline Cochrane, Minister Shane Thompson, Minister Julie Green, a representative from the City of Yellowknife and program experts from several GNWT departments will be available to answer questions.

Have Your Say on Amendments to the Disease Surveillance Regulations

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proposing amendments to the Disease Surveillance Regulations to create additional registers, as well as update the Schedules and reporting requirements for reportable diseases, conditions, and tests.

These amendments reflect best practice and will assist the Department of Health and Social Services in dealing with emerging diseases in a timely manner to ensure the health of residents is protected.

Have Your Say on Amendments to Immunization Regulations

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proposing amendments to the Immunization Regulations that make changes to the collection of information, and update which immunizations are reported to the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO).

These amendments reflect best practice and will assist the Department of Health and Social Services in dealing with emerging diseases and immunizations in a timely manner to ensure the health of residents continues to be protected.

GNWT partners with Sunrise Healing Lodge to offer Indigenous addictions treatment options for residents

The GNWT is pleased to announce a partnership with the Sunrise Healing Lodge, an Indigenous addictions treatment facility in Calgary. Sunrise Healing Lodge offers a wide range of Indigenous programming for addictions treatment.

Sunrise Healing Lodge is open to individuals from various backgrounds and incorporates Indigenous culture, spirituality, and the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous into its treatment approach.  Residents can benefit from a 14-week Treatment Program, which includes cultural teachings, sharing circles, educational sessions, and guest presentations.
