The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has improved how financial assistance is provided to residents, small businesses, and community governments in the event of a widespread natural disaster. The updated Disaster Assistance Policy (DAP) is being implemented immediately to assist people in flooded communities starting today.
YELLOWKNIFE (MAY 15, 2022; 20:30pm) -- The Town of Hay River has announced residents can return to Town to assess their properties.
While this announcement does allow all evacuees to return home, there will unfortunately be many homes which are not habitable – even in less-affected areas.

Premier Caroline Cochrane and Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, issued the following statement on behalf of Cabinet concerning the current flooding in Hay River and Kátł’odeeche First Nation:
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will match donations up to $150,000, to support those impacted by flooding in 2022 in the Northwest Territories.
The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is announcing the annual notice of the nomination deadline for the Northwest Territories (NWT) Outstanding Volunteer Awards. This year marks the 31st year of this award, which recognizes and celebrates the remarkable contributions volunteers make in communities across the NWT.
Residents are encouraged to nominate an elder, youth, individual, or group of volunteers in their community. This program acknowledges those who give their time to improve the quality of life for their fellow NWT residents.
