NWT ALERT TESTING

On November 20, 2024 at 1:55 pm MST, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will issue a live test of NWT Alert, the Northwest Territories public alerting system. Residents may see and hear the public alert test on wireless devices, cable networks and radio stations across the NWT.

NWT Alert is the NWT’s public alerting system designed to keep residents and visitors informed during emergencies. For important information during an emergency, check with your community government and visit www.NWTalert.ca.

Five years of life-saving 9-1-1 service transforms emergency access for NWT residents

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is marking the fifth anniversary of the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) 9-1-1 service, an essential lifeline for residents and visitors needing emergency assistance. Since its launch on November 4, 2019, NWT 9-1-1 has strengthened public safety across the territory by providing a single, universally-recognized number to reach emergency responders anywhere in the territory. This has reduced the need to dial community-specific emergency numbers.

Provide feedback on proposed changes to the 2020 National Model Codes

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) invites residents to participate in a public review of proposed changes to the 2020 National Model Codes. Led by the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC), this review offers a valuable opportunity for residents to provide input on building standards that directly impact safety and quality of life.

9-1-1 cost recovery fee increase effective January 1, 2025

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) would like to inform telephone service subscribers that, effective January 1, 2025, the 9-1-1 cost recovery fee will increase by $1.30 monthly, bringing the total monthly fee to $3.00.

The fee is currently set at $1.70. This adjustment will apply to all ratepayers with NWT phone numbers and will mark the first fee change since the service launched on November 19, 2019.

Vince McKay: 2024 Canada 55+ Games

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize and congratulate the participants who represented Team NT at the 2024 Canada 55+ Games that were held in Quebec City, Quebec from August 27 to 30, 2024. 

The Canada 55+ Games provide an opportunity for Team NT to engage and compete with other athletes from across Canada. In addition to being an athletic competition, these Games also provide an opportunity for participants to engage in other forms of competition and social activities with their peers.  

Minister McKay issues statement on NWT's decision not to proceed with hosting the 2028 Arctic Winter Games

Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Vince McKay, issued the following statement today about the territory’s decision not to proceed with hosting the 2028 Arctic Winter Games:

“The Northwest Territories (NWT) has made the difficult decision to not proceed with hosting the 2028 Arctic Winter Games, which the territory was slated to host for the first time since the Games were held in the South Slave Region in 2018.
