GNWT releases draft action plan to address Calls for Justice on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

Today, Caroline Wawzonek, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, tabled the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) draft action plan to address the Calls for Justice presented in Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

Tourism Licensing Renewal Fees Waived for Third Year Running

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has waived tourism renewal licensing fees for the third year in a row, as the global pandemic continues to impact the tourism industry.

Under the Tourism Act, all tourism operators providing commercial tourism activities in the Northwest Territories (NWT) are required to have a valid Tourism Operator Licence (TOL) with prescribed support documents including proof of insurance.

2021 Climate Action and Energy Reports Released

The Government of the Northwest Territories has taken action to address the climate crisis and make energy more secure, reliable, and sustainable in 2020-2021.

Progress is highlighted in four reports, which will be tabled in the legislature later today - Responding to Climate Change: Overview Report 2020-2021, NWT Climate Change Action Plan Report 2020-2021, Northwest Territories Energy Initiatives Report 2020-2021, and the NWT Carbon Tax Report 2020-2021.

The overview report summarizes the GNWT’s activities to address climate change.

Public Health Emergency Extended Through December 21

Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green has extended the territory-wide Public Health Emergency under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola.

The latest extension continues through December 21, 2021. 

The Public Health Emergency is required to continue to decisively respond to shifts in the NWT’s own public health situation, and maintain preventative measures.

New day shelter opens in downtown Yellowknife

Julie Green, Minister of Health and Social Services, issued the following statement on the opening of the new day shelter in Yellowknife:

“As part of our commitment to reconciliation, and to ensure that everyone can access safe shelter facilities, I’m pleased to announce that a new temporary day shelter for people experiencing homelessness opened its doors  to the homeless population this morning.
