Government of Canada Assists GNWT's Airport Safety Funding in Yellowknife

August 9, 2011 - The Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, was joined today by the Honourable Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment for the Government of the Northwest Territories on behalf of the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister of Transportation, to announce that the Government of Canada is investing $369,500 in improvements to the Yellowknife Airport.

NWT Labour Force Activity – July 2011

August 8, 2011 - For July 2011, Statistics Canada estimates that 23,200 out of 32,100 residents 15 years of age and older were employed in the Northwest Territories, representing an employment rate of 72.3%. Overall, Canada’s employment rate stood at 62.9% in July.

Compared to the previous month, employment rose by 600 persons with an additional 600 new entrants to the labour force. The gains in labour force and employment were observed mostly for persons 15 to 24 years of age.

Ferries Extends Hours for Gwich’in Annual General Meeting

August 5, 2011 - Hours of operation of the Arctic Red River ferry at km. 143 Dempster Highway will be extended from Tuesday August 9 to Thursday August 11 to accommodate highway travellers attending the Gwich’in Annual General Meeting in Tsiigehtchic. The ferry will operate from 7:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m., with the last ferry leaving the Tsiigehtchic access side at 12:40 a.m. Hours of operation of the Peel River ferry at km. 74 Dempster Highway will run from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Normal hours of operation will resume on Friday, August 12.

Tulita Boil Water Advisory Rescinded

August 3, 2011 - The Chief Environmental Health Officer advises residents of Tulita the Boil Water Advisory, in effect since July 21, 2011, has now been lifted.

Conditions leading to the advisory have been resolved and Tulita’s water is safe to drink.  Consecutive satisfactory sample results from testing conducted on July 27th and 29th for bacteriological, free available chlorine and turbidity samples confirmed the water is safe to drink. Note: bacteriological, free chlorine and turbidity are three different sample types.

NWT Fire Management Personnel Assist with Ontario Wildfires

August 3, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories is sending 31 fire management personnel to Ontario as part of the Canadian Interagency Mutual Aid Resources Sharing Agreement (MARS Agreement).

Six five-person crews and an agency representative left for Thunder Bay today to help fight wildfires in the northwest part of the province.  The crews are from across the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Update on Elective Surgeries – Stanton Territorial Hospital

August 2, 2011 - Stanton Territorial Hospital is targeting August 12, 2011 to resume elective surgeries. This target date is based on current sterilization equipment showing consistent safety results.

“Safety of patients is our priority,” said Minister of Health and Social Services J. Michael Miltenberger. “Only when Stanton Territorial Health Authority is satisfied that consistent results can be achieved, will we resume our normal business.”

Health and Social Services Introduces YouTube Channel

July 28, 2011 - The Department of Health and Social Services (HSS) is broadcasting its messages to Northwest Territories (NWT) Residents on its new YouTube Channel.

HSS has launched its official YouTube Channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/HSSCommunications. The channel has informational videos on public health, environmental health, social services, addictions and seniors programming.
