Premier Offers Condolences to 6560 Victims and on the Passing of Jack Layton

August 22, 2011 - Premier Floyd Roland made two official statements at the beginning of this afternoon’s session of the Legislative Assembly regarding the tragic events in Resolute Bay this weekend and the passing of Jack Layton.

Mr. Speaker, on behalf of this 16th Assembly, our Government and all residents of the Northwest Territories I offer condolences today to those individuals and families who are mourning the loss of colleagues, friends, relatives and loved ones as a result of this weekend’s tragic crash of First Air Flight 6560 near Resolute Bay.

NWT and Government of Canada Work Together to Increase Emergency Preparedness Capacity

August 19, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working in partnership with the Government of Canada to enhance emergency preparedness and response activities in the NWT.

Seven projects totalling approximately $450,000 received funding in 2010-11. This included a contribution of $194,000 from the Government of Canada through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) to support Canada’s emergency management priorities – developing valuable learning events and the improvement of telecommunications capacity.

PNWER to Meet in NWT for the First Time

August 16, 2011 - Canadian and U.S. government officials along with business leaders will meet in Yellowknife this week to discuss issues of importance to the Northwest Territories (NWT) at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) Capital Visit and Arctic Caucus.

The Capital Visit will take place on Aug. 17, and the Arctic Caucus will be held on Aug. 18 – 19, 2011.

Pacific Northwest Economic Region Capital Visit in Yellowknife

August 12, 2011 - Canadian and U.S. Legislators and business leaders will meet at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) Capital Visit and Arctic Caucus in Yellowknife.

Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Bob McLeod will host and chair the 2011 PNWER Capital Visit and Arctic Caucus. MLA for Kam Lake and Chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Infrastructure David Ramsay will also be attending.

The Capital Visit will take place on August 17, and the Arctic Caucus will be held on August 18 – 19, 2011.

Government of Canada Assists GNWT's Airport Safety Funding in Yellowknife

August 9, 2011 - The Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, was joined today by the Honourable Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment for the Government of the Northwest Territories on behalf of the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister of Transportation, to announce that the Government of Canada is investing $369,500 in improvements to the Yellowknife Airport.
