July 28, 2011 - The Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority (YHSSA) has initiated “Same Day Services” at the Yellowknife Primary Care Centre and Frame Lake Community Health Clinic in response to suggestions from clients and staff in an operational review conducted in April.   

Same Day Services will replace “Walk-In” services formerly delivered at these sites.  Same Day Services allow clients to schedule appointments with a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse or Physician, on the day that they call for the appointment.

July 25, 2011 - The Northwest Territories delegation has returned from the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) Annual Summit in Portland, During the summit, NWT representatives had the opportunity to raise the profile of critical northern issues such as energy and mining.

July 22, 2011 - The Norman Wells float base is celebrating its Grand Opening after numerous infrastructure improvements have been made including: the replacement of docks, addition of a Hospitality and Interpretive Centre, and development of grounds for a Sahtu Aviation Museum. The improvements were made possible through $600,000 in funding support over four years through the GNWT Tourism Product Diversification and Marketing Program.

July 20, 2011 - Aboriginal leaders in the NWT are providing unprecedented support for the Education Partnership Declaration (EDP), a GNWT initiative spearheaded by Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Jackson Lafferty. The EPD marks the first time Aboriginal leaders have united in such a strong show of support for education.

July 19, 2011 - Sylvia Clement of Tulita has been awarded this year’s Council of the Federation (CoF) Literacy Award for the Northwest Territories.

Presented annually to one individual from each of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, the award celebrates outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy across the entire spectrum of the field of literacy, including: family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community.

July 19, 2011 - The NWT film industry has become one of the territory’s most promising sectors and is in a great position to grow, thanks to recent changes by the Government of the Northwest Territories.

Recognizing the promise of this vibrant industry, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) has restructured the Film Commission staff and added a dedicated Associate Film Commissioner to provide support to the NWT film industry to better serve aspiring northern filmmakers.

July 14, 2011 - Monday marked the start of the second annual NWT Aboriginal Languages Summer Institute. A partnership between the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and the University of Victoria Certificate Program in Aboriginal Language Revitalization, the two-week Institute runs from July 11th to the 23rd, 2011 and brings together 19 participants from across the NWT.

July 13, 2011 - Youth attending the Forging the Future – Potential Leaders Conference in Yellowknife have identified two important concerns they want to see addressed by future leaders of the Northwest Territories:  consultations for regional treatment centers and the addition of school counsellors in every school in the NWT.

July 13, 2011 - An Independent External Quality Assurance Investigation, conducted by Dr. Douglas C. Perry with findings submitted directly to the Stanton Territorial Health Authority, endorses the professional response of Stanton employees and recommends:

1. Consideration be given to establishing trained in-house special constables with legislated powers to restrain and assist in direct patient care.
