Canada Makes Funding Commitment to NWT Priority

March 23, 2011 - Premier Floyd K. Roland says Canada’s commitment to construct an all-season road between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk demonstrates that NWT priorities are being heard and recognized in Ottawa. The road is an important first step for the Mackenzie Valley Highway project.

The Premier says the commitment reflects federal recognition that investment in northern infrastructure needs can promote financial recovery and nation building.

Premier Congratulates Newly Elected Tlicho Grand Chief

March 23, 2011 - Premier Floyd K. Roland offers congratulations to Mr. Eddie Erasmus, who was elected Tlicho Grand Chief yesterday.

“I look forward to working with Mr. Erasmus bilaterally and as part of the regional leaders table,” said Premier Roland. “I hope to meet with Grand Chief-elect Erasmus in the coming weeks to discuss matters of mutual interest.”

The Tlicho Government, created in 2005 by the Tlicho Agreement, is the NWT’s first Aboriginal self-government.

World Tuberculosis Day – March 24, 2011

March 23, 2011 - World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, increases public awareness that tuberculosis remains an epidemic in much of the world.

The rate of TB in the NWT is four to five times the national average – with about 30 per cent of NWT residents who have latent TB infections in their bodies which usually remains inactive and not a risk to the public. TB rates are highest among the Aboriginal population.

GNWT Offers Aid to Japan

March 18, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories is joining the Government of Canada and other provinces in responding to last week’s tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with the people of Japan, and with those NWT residents who have loved ones in the area,” said Premier Floyd K. Roland.
