ITI Minister to Attend Aboriginal Oil and Gas Forum

Decemeber 6, 2010 - Tomorrow, the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Bob McLeod, will be the keynote speaker at the Aboriginal Oil and Gas Forum luncheon in Edmonton, and will discuss the Northwest Territories’ experience with Aboriginal equity partnership models. During the two-day Forum, he will also attend several information sessions.

New Chair of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation

December 3, 2010 - Minister Floyd K. Roland has announced today the appointment of Mr. Brendan Bell as Chair of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation for a three year term.

The former GNWT Minister Responsible for Energy brings key northern political experience to the Corporation’s leadership, along with a valuable understanding of the NWT’s energy potential and marketplace.

NWT Residents Urged to Be Visible, Be Safe

December 2, 2010 - With shorter days upon us, residents of the Northwest Territories are reminded to be safe when walking on our streets, roads, and highways.

In 2009, two fatalities occurred when drivers collided with pedestrians during hours of darkness. In each case, the drivers did not see the victim until it was too late.

Transportation Minister Michael McLeod says it is important that every pedestrian wear reflective clothing or lights to ensure they are visible to the approaching motorist.

High Performance Athlete Grant Recipients Announced

December 1, 2010 - The recipients of the 2010-2011 High Performance Athlete Grant were announced today by the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod, and the president of the Sport North Federation, Richard Daitch.

“It is great to see so many northern athletes doing so well on the national and international scene,” said Minister McLeod. “We are proud of them all and hope that this grant will assist them in achieving their goals and aspirations and allow them to represent the NWT with pride.”

Campaign Targets Elder Abuse Awareness in NWT

December 1, 2010 - Financial abuse has been identified as the most common form of elder abuse in the NWT and the rest of Canada.

The Department of Health and Social Services, in partnership with the NWT Seniors’ Society and the YWCA, has launched a new campaign, “Together We Can Stop Elder Abuse,” to raise awareness and provide information on elder abuse – particularly financial abuse – in the NWT.

Dehcho Region Parks Staff Honoured For His Contributions

November 29, 2010 - Mr. Burton Campbell’s dedication to making every visitors’ experience at Blackstone Territorial Park in the Dehcho region a spectacular one has earned him the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) 2010 Parks Award.

The award is part of ITI’s Happy Camper Program, which was created in 2005 to recognize people who exhibit extraordinary hospitality and service in our parks and visitor centres.

Community Meetings on Draft Wildlife Act Underway

November 26, 2010 - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is hosting community meetings on the proposed new Wildlife Act for the Northwest Territories.

This is an opportunity for residents to learn about the proposed new Wildlife Act and provide their input on this important wildlife legislation before it is introduced in the Legislative Assembly during the 2011 winter session.

Meetings are planned for all NWT communities during the next several weeks.
