Preferred Proponent for Tłı̨chǫ All Season Road Project

The construction of the Tłı̨chǫ All Season Road Project moves closer reality with the announcement today by Finance Minister Robert C. McLeod that North Star Infrastructure has been selected as the Preferred Proponent, pursuant to the GNWT’s Request for Proposal for the project.

 

The GNWT and NSI will be working together to finalize the Project Agreement and start the preparatory work required before construction can begin later the Fall of 2019.

Cannabis Update

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is providing an update on the distribution and sales of legalized cannabis in the Northwest Territories.

 

On October 17, 2018, when cannabis was legalized across the country, the GNWT began sales through existing liquor store vendors and via on-line. In the first four days of operations, sales of legal cannabis totaled approximately $129,600. Of this total, approximately $10,900 was the result of on-line sales. Sales took place in all NWT regions.

 

Government of the Northwest Territories announces approach to carbon pricing

YELLOWKNIFE (July 11, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is releasing its planned approach to implementing carbon pricing in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The made in the North approach balances implementing carbon pricing as a tool to incent behaviors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), with investments in initiatives and programs that lead to greater use of renewable and cleaners fuels, while ensuring that we minimize impacts on the cost of living and doing business in the NWT.

New Five-Year Contract for NWT Physicians

YELLOWKNIFE (July 6, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Northwest Territories Medical Association (NWTMA) are pleased to announce that they have ratified an agreement on a contract for physician services in the Northwest Territories. The previous contract between the GNWT and the NWTMA expired on March 31, 2016. 

Discussions for a new agreement began in January 2016 and ended in May 2018 when both sides reached an agreement in principle.  The final agreement was ratified by both parties in early June 2018.

Cannabis Prohibition Options and Timelines

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has recently passed Bill 6: Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, which legalizes the sale and use of cannabis in the NWT. 

Part 4 of the Northwest Territories’ Cannabis Product Act provides NWT community governments with an option to hold a local plebiscite to decide whether to prohibit or restrict cannabis sales and distribution within community boundaries.  This option is similar to the option that exists for restricting liquor.
