The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working with the federal department of Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) to determine the viability of a remediation-based economy in the Northwest Territories (NWT); and how to best position NWT residents and businesses to keep the economic benefits from remediation activities in the territory.

Have Your Say on policy intentions for the Mineral Resources Act

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released an overview of the policy intentions that will guide the drafting of regulations for the NWT Mineral Resources Act (MRA).    

An important next step in the development of regulations for the MRA, these policy intentions reflect the objectives and rationales agreed to by northern governments under the Legislative Development Protocol developed and adopted by the Intergovernmental Council of the NWT.

GNWT releases recommendations from arts funding review

 The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the Arts Program Review Report , marking the completion of the first key action item of the Northwest Territories (NWT) Arts Strategy.

The report assesses arts funding programs across the GNWT, identifies areas of strength and weakness, and provides recommendations on how to improve arts programs and services to better serve NWT residents.

The Government of the Northwest Territories has a responsibility to ensure benefits from the extraction of NWT natural resources are provided to residents of the NWT.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment has three initiatives that are advancing the priority set by the 19th Legislative Assembly to advance a benefit retention approach to economic development in the NWT.

Have your say on Regional Economic Development Planning

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is engaging NWT residents online and in person to inform the development of Economic Development Plans (REDPs) for each region.

NWT residents are invited to complete a public survey on the GNWT’s Have Your Say engagement platform where they will find a discussion paper as well as economic profiles and data for their respective regions.  The deadline to provide input is January 31, 2023.
