Fire Ban in Effect – Hidden Lake Territorial Park

Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is in effect for Hidden Lake Territorial Park.

Paddlers and campers are advised to use only camp stoves for cooking.

Fire Ban in Effect - Hay River Territorial Park

Due to current weather conditions, the Town of Hay River has banned open air fires within municipal boundaries.

Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for the Hay River Territorial Park and campground.

Camp stoves, enclosed BBQs and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks. They must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.

2022 Socio-Economic Agreement Report released

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released its 2022 Socio-Economic Agreement (SEA) Report for mines operating in the Northwest Territories (NWT).  

NWT diamond mines contributed $1.2 billion to the NWT Gross Domestic Product in 2022. In total, the NWT’s three producing diamond mines spent nearly $755 million with NWT-based businesses and contributed the equivalent of 1,094 person-years of employment to NWT residents.

GNWT takes action to improve progress on NWT Arts Strategy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released its response to the recommendations of the Arts Program Review.

The GNWT agrees with all the report’s recommendations and has started to make operational changes based on the recommendations and feedback gathered from the arts and creative sector during engagement session for the NWT Arts Strategy and during the program review. This will include:

Fire Ban Lifted: Fort Simpson and Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Parks

The fire ban in effect at the Fort Simpson and Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Parks has been lifted. 

NWT Parks reminds parks users that campfires should only be lit in designated fire pits and must always be kept control.  Keep a bucket of water, sand, and a shovel handy.  Be sure to extinguish your fire before you go to sleep or when you leave the site. Remember that if your fire is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave.

GNWT releases Innovation Action Plan to prepare NWT for knowledge economy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released an Innovation Action Plan to serve as a stepping stone towards the development of an NWT-based knowledge economy.

The plan identifies goals and actions in five priority areas, critical to the eventual development of the NWT’s knowledge economy. The five priority areas are:

- Greater collaboration

- Development and attraction of skilled workers

- Research, development, and commercialization of knowledge

- Entrepreneur and business development

- Improved connectivity

The fire ban in effect at the McKinnon Territorial Park in Norman Wells has been lifted.  

NWT Parks reminds parks users that campfires should only be lit in designated fire pits and must always be kept control.  Keep a bucket of water, sand and a shovel handy.  Be sure to extinguish your fire before you go to sleep or when you leave the site. Caroline Wawzonek: Update on the Great Slave Lake Commercial Fishery Revitalization

Mr. Speaker, the revitalization of the Great Slave Lake Commercial fishery has been a goal of the Government of the Northwest Territories since it was first proposed in the 2014 NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy.

This goal continues to be supported by our own government’s mandate to: increase food security through locally produced, harvested, and affordable food.

Central to our efforts has been the construction of a new fish processing facility in Hay River capable of processing and packaging Great Slave Lake fish for market.
