GNWT Announces Relief Measures to Support Diamond Sector Stability, Protect Jobs and Safeguard Northern Economy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is implementing targeted relief measures to support the diamond mining sector—the NWT’s largest industry and biggest contributor to the economy—in response to growing financial pressures and industry-wide uncertainty. These actions are designed to maintain economic stability, support local employment and businesses, and sustain decades of Indigenous economic partnership and regional development.

Mr. Speaker, we have great rocks.  The global demand for critical minerals continues to grow, and the Northwest Territories is well-positioned to play a key role supplying these essential resources to Canada and its allies. With over 2/3 of the critical minerals listed by Canada and almost half identified by the United States, our territory is a significant contributor to securing a stable and responsible supply of materials vital to clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital technologies.

Mr. Speaker, strengthening internal trade is essential to ensuring that businesses across Canada can grow, compete, and thrive. With the United States’ decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports and the Canadian government’s counter-tariffs, Canada urgently needs to strengthen our internal trade framework. Studies show that eliminating interprovincial trade barriers could add billions to Canada’s gross domestic product annually, lower consumer costs, and improve supply chain resilience.
