GNWT releases Innovation Action Plan to prepare NWT for knowledge economy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released an Innovation Action Plan to serve as a stepping stone towards the development of an NWT-based knowledge economy.

The plan identifies goals and actions in five priority areas, critical to the eventual development of the NWT’s knowledge economy. The five priority areas are:

- Greater collaboration

- Development and attraction of skilled workers

- Research, development, and commercialization of knowledge

- Entrepreneur and business development

- Improved connectivity

Fire Ban Lifted for McKinnon Territorial Park (Norman Wells)

The fire ban in effect at the McKinnon Territorial Park in Norman Wells has been lifted.  

NWT Parks reminds parks users that campfires should only be lit in designated fire pits and must always be kept control.  Keep a bucket of water, sand and a shovel handy.  Be sure to extinguish your fire before you go to sleep or when you leave the site. Remember that if your fire is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave.

Use the SOAK, STIR, SOAK method to put out your campfire.

Caroline Wawzonek: Update on the Great Slave Lake Commercial Fishery Revitalization

Mr. Speaker, the revitalization of the Great Slave Lake Commercial fishery has been a goal of the Government of the Northwest Territories since it was first proposed in the 2014 NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy.

This goal continues to be supported by our own government’s mandate to: increase food security through locally produced, harvested, and affordable food.

Central to our efforts has been the construction of a new fish processing facility in Hay River capable of processing and packaging Great Slave Lake fish for market.

Fire Ban in Effect for Fort Simpson and Sambaa Deh Territorial Parks

Due to current weather conditions the Town of Fort Simpson has implemented a fire ban on open air fires within municipal boundaries.

Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for the Fort Simpson and Sambaa Deh Territorial Parks.

Camp stoves, enclosed BBQs and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks. They must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.

Fire bans lifted for Fred Henne/Yellowknife River Territorial Parks

The fire bans at the Fred Henne and Yellowknife River Territorial Parks have been lifted.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment reminds park users to remain cautious and ensure all fires are extinguished before leaving campsites.

Due to current weather conditions the Town of Fort Smith has implemented a fire ban on open air fires within municipal boundaries. Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for the Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park.

Due to current weather conditions the City of Yellowknife has implemented a fire ban on open air fires within municipal boundaries. Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for the Fred Henne and Yellowknife River territorial parks.

Camp stoves, enclosed BBQs and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks. They must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.

Due to high temperatures and very dry conditions in the Sahtu Region, the Town of Norman Wells has implemented a fire ban on open air fires within municipal boundaries. Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for MacKinnon Territorial Park.

Camp stoves, enclosed BBQs and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks. They must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.

Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC) to Operate New NWT Fish Processing Plant

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has entered into an agreement with the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC) to operate the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) new fish processing facility in Hay River.

FFMC is a Crown corporation established in 1969 that purchases, processes and markets freshwater fish products across Canada and around the world. FFMC is partnering with the GNWT to expanded fish processing capability and strengthen local capacity to operate the plant.

GNWT Introducing Emerging Entrepreneurs Business Mentorship Program

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has introduced the Emerging Entrepreneurs Business Mentorship Program to provide entrepreneurs in the Northwest Territories (NWT) with the opportunity and financial support to gain valuable skills in business, leadership, and networking from an experienced business mentor.
