Community Leadership Strengthened as Inuvik Homeless Shelter Transitions to Advisory Board

The Inuvik Homeless Shelter will enter a new chapter of community-led leadership on January 5, 2026, when operational responsibility transitions from Housing NWT to the Inuvik Homeless Shelter Advisory Board.

The transition reflects a long-standing community goal to have homelessness services guided by local voices, while ensuring shelter services continue without disruption for those who rely on them.

Premier Simpson and Cabinet Ministers join MLA for Nunakput Lucy Kuptana for a tour of the Nunakput riding, to strengthen community connections across the Arctic coast

Premier RJ Simpson, along with Ministers Lesa Semmler, Vince McKay, and senior government officials, joined MLA for Nunakput and Minister of Housing NWT and Status of Women, Lucy Kuptana, on a four-day constituency tour of the Nunakput region. Acting in both her roles as MLA and Minister, Lucy Kuptana led the tour, which included visits to Sachs Harbour, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk, and a drive to Tuktoyaktuk, with the goals of listening to residents, learning about local priorities, and building stronger relationships between communities and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT).

Caroline Wawzonek: Keynote Address: Sustainable Communities for a Secure Arctic

Good morning — Drin Gwiinzii (drin gweezee), Ullukkut (oo-LAH-kkut).

It’s a real pleasure to be here in Inuvik today. Thank you for the opportunity to speak on behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories.

I want to acknowledge the many leaders in the room—elected leadership as well as those who are leaders in communities and in business.

I want to start with a quote from the Northwest Territories chapter of the federal government’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework, launched back in 2019, that I’ve repeatedly gone back to and still find relevant:

Keynote Remarks - Arctic Development Expo - MLA Denny Rodgers, on behalf of Premier R.J. Simpson

Good morning everyone,

Thank you for the opportunity to be here with you in Inuvik for the Arctic Development Expo. It’s always good to be back in the Beaufort Delta, and especially meaningful to speak on a subject as important—and as personal to Northerners—as Arctic sovereignty and security.
