Premier Bob McLeod on Future Arctic Oil and Gas Development

Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod issued the following statement today on next steps on future Arctic oil and gas development:

“The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) welcomes an announcement on offshore development in the Arctic Ocean by federal Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade Dominic LeBlanc and Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi.

GNWT and RCMP conduct roadside alcohol and drug survey in Yellowknife

The Department of Infrastructure (INF), with assistance from the RCMP, conducted a roadside drug and alcohol survey from September 26- 29, 2018 in Yellowknife.

The survey was to collect baseline data on the prevalence of impaired driving before the legalization of cannabis on October 17. This data will assist INF in creating educational campaigns that target specific groups based on the frequency of drug and alcohol use.

Department of Health and Social Services Waives Change of Name and related NWT Vital Statistics Fees

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommendations, Glen Abernethy, Minister of Health and Social Services, has approved a process to waive the Northwest Territories (NWT) change of name fee for Residential School Survivors and their families who wish to reclaim their name. The recommendation is to waive fees for a period of five years.

The Minister is extending this process to all Indigenous residents who wish to correct the names on their NWT birth certificates that were affected by historical errors.

Film Apprenticeship Pilot Program Announced

A new Film Apprenticeship Program will soon provide opportunities for the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) film workforce to gain on-the-job experience with major film productions.

Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) Wally Schumann announced the initiative on Saturday at the NWT Film Gala and awards event concluding Yellowknife’s 12th annual International Film Festival.

Tourism Business Mentorship Agreement Renewed

The GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) has renewed its successful partnership with the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO).

The agreement supports ITI’s work to build a sustainable, professional, skilled and trained tourism workforce by supporting mentorship opportunities for tourism operators and employees under the Department’s Tourism Business Mentorship Program.

North Slave Resiliency Study tabled

YELLOWKNIFE (June 8, 2016) – Minister of Public Works and Services Caroline Cochrane tabled the North Slave Resiliency Study during today’s sitting of the Legislative Assembly.

The study was undertaken in response to a commitment in the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Mandate to better use our existing hydroelectric resources by exploring options to respond to low water in the North Slave hydroelectric power system.
