Today, Minister Jay Macdonald expressed his condolences following last week’s helicopter crash near Fort Good Hope:
“On June 28, 2024, the Northwest Territories experienced the tragic death of a helicopter pilot while in the line of duty for the Fort Good Hope wildfire. There are no words to express how deeply saddened I am by the loss of a member of the wildfire family.
Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Minister Vince McKay has appointed Tom Beaulieu as the new Administrator for the Hamlet of Fort Resolution.
Mr. Beaulieu will continue the work to stabilize operations and address the challenges that the Hamlet has faced. The community has been under Administration since June 5, 2023 in an exceptional measure deemed necessary to address financial and operational challenges.
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking public feedback on two sets of proposed regulations following Bill 67: An Act to Amend the Fire Prevention Act.
New Plan Review Appeal Board Regulations
Recent amendments to the Act make any requirements from the Office of the Fire Marshal in a plan review report binding as orders.
The proposed Plan Review Appeals Board Regulations will govern the process to appeal plan review orders issued by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Two sets of regulations came into force on July 1, 2024 that support improvements to the Northwest Territories (NWT) Income Assistance program.
They include:
Due to fire danger in the region, a fire ban has been put into effect for Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park, prohibiting open fires. The ban, which is in addition to any regional fire bans in place by NWT Fire, is effective from June 27, 2024 until July 8, 2024.
Camp stoves, enclosed barbeques, and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks, but they must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) have reached an agreement in principle. Both parties will be recommending ratification of the agreement - the UNW to their membership and GNWT to the Financial Management Board.
Minister R.J. Simpson announced today the appointment of Erin Wagner as the new Public Trustee of the Northwest Territories, effective June 17, 2024. Ms. Wagner succeeds Ms. Renée Fougère, who held the position since last year.
