Call for Applications for the 2018-2019 NGO Stabilization Fund

YELLOWKNIFE (April 25, 2018) - The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), Alfred Moses has issued the annual call for applications for the 2018 NGO Stabilization Fund.

The NGO Stabilization Fund provides special funding to help NGOs that deliver critical GNWT-funded programs or services to the public to stabilize or develop their capacity to manage programs and services.

Salvation Army Extends Lease for Additional Six Months to Operate Sobering Centre

YELLOWKNIFE (April 4, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories has extended the lease for another six months with the Salvation Army in Yellowknife to operate the Yellowknife Sobering Centre.

The temporary location will continue to provide services for those in need while renovations continue on the long-term facility at 5111 50th Street. The sobering centre is operated by the NWT Disability Council, with Advanced Medical Solutions providing clinical services as needed.

This website responds to direction in the mandate of the Minister of Public Engagement and Transparency to promote awareness about information on government accountability.

Wolf Sightings in the Yellowknife Area

YELLOWKNIFE (March 22, 2018) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) wishes to advise the public of wolf sightings near or around the Back Bay and Yellowknife Bay areas of Yellowknife, near Ndılǫ.

An increase in wildlife sightings is often an indication of residents intentionally or unintentionally providing a food source. Do not leave food, fish entrails or other attractants outside your home, camp or cabin.

Don’t Just Sit There…Get Checked for Colorectal Cancer!

YELLOWKNIFE (March 9, 2018) – Aurora College and the Department of Health and Social Services are hosting a seniors’ health fair in the Centre Square Mall as part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month on Tuesday, March 13, between 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

One of the more interesting displays at the fair will be a Giant Colon that is 20 feet in length. The public is invited to come see the Giant Colon and other displays being presented by first year nursing students and health department staff.

Ice Sculpture at the Yellowknife Airport

YELLOWKNIFE (March 9, 2018) – Yellowknife Airport (YZF) is the site of a unique ice sculpture being prepared by internationally recognized carvers Eli Nasogaluak , John Sabourin and Derrald Taylor.

Working together as Frozen Rock Studios, the three local carvers will create a special northern themed sculpture celebrating the Dene and Inuvialuit cultures. The carving of the ice sculpture is expected to take two to four days, depending on weather conditions.

New Cancer Glossary Aims to Help Improve Communication and Awareness about Cancer among Sahtu Residents

YELLOWKNIFE (February 27, 2018) — Residents in the Sahtu region of the Northwest Territories now have access to a glossary of cancer terms in various dialects of North Slavey to help them learn more about the disease and treatment options. 

Developed in partnership with the K’asho Got’ine Charter Community, the Tulita Dene Band, The Goba Group, and the Government of the Northwest Territories, this new language resource should improve how patients, family members and health officials speak about cancer in the region.
