Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway to open early November 15 for Tuktoyaktuk residents

TUKTOYAKTUK (November 9, 2017) - The Department of Infrastructure is pleased to announce that the official opening ceremonies of the Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway will take place in Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk on Wednesday, November 15.

To allow residents of Tuktoyaktuk the opportunity to take part in the Inuvik ceremonies, the highway will open to southbound traffic at 6:00 a.m. on November 15.

Arsenic Warning Signs Installed at Lakes with High Arsenic around Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE (November 6, 2017) — The Government of the Northwest Territories and the City of Yellowknife have installed arsenic warning signs to these highly accessible lakes in the Yellowknife area:                            

  • Frame Lake
  • Jackfish Lake
  • Kam Lake
  • Rat Lake

These signs complement other steps taken earlier this year to raise awareness about this important issue amongst residents and visitors.

Release of "Cannabis Legalization in the Northwest Territories - What We Heard Report"

Yellowknife (October 24, 2017) – Louis Sebert, Minister for the Department of Justice with the Government of the Northwest Territories would like to announce that the Cannabis Legalization in the Northwest Territories What We Heard Report has been tabled in the Legislative Assembly and is now available to the public.

NWT Agricultural Conference Focuses on Business of Food Production

HAY RIVER (October 13, 2017) – The Northwest Territories’ (NWT) first Agriculture Conference to focus on food growers and producers is taking place in Hay River, October 13-15, 2017.

A variety of sessions take place throughout the conference with a central theme of helping farmers and producers to grow their businesses. Topics include: panel discussions on raising chickens and beekeeping, northern agriculture research, greenhouse management, cold storage and root cellars, the business of farming and a review of the Growing Forward 2 Program.

2017 NWT Fire Service Merit Award Recipients

YELLOWKNIFE (October 11, 2017) – Each year, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, recognizes members of the NWT Fire Service for their work in protecting our families and homes from the threat of fire by presenting the annual Fire Service Merit Awards.

NWT Fire Service Merit Awards are granted based on nominations from community members and fire chiefs, to honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contribution to fire safety and fire service across the territory.

Seniors’ Information Handbook 2017

YELLOWKNIFE (October 11, 2017) — The Government of the Northwest Territories in partnership with the NWT Seniors’ Society has released the 6th edition of the Seniors’ Information Handbook.

The Seniors’ Information Handbook (Handbook) provides a comprehensive list of programs and services available to support Northwest Territories seniors. Seniors and their caregivers are encouraged to access the Handbook to learn about the range of supports available to help keep them independent and active in their home communities.

Pop Up Gallery and Events Hosted in Celebration of NWT Arts Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 22, 2017) – Celebrate Northwest Territories (NWT) Arts Week, September 25-29, by popping into the first-ever NWT Arts Pop Up Gallery and other exciting events.

The week-long Pop Up Gallery, hosted in Yellowknife, will feature a curated selection of local artwork, live demonstrations by NWT artists, and a content-collection area for artists to have their work photographed (by appointment only).

Mineral Resources Act - New Date Announced for Behchokǫ̀ Engagement Session

YELLOWKNIFE (SEPTEMBER 19, 2017) — Tłı̨chǫ residents will have the chance to shape a strong, well-managed future NWT mining and exploration at a re-scheduled public engagement session for the Northwest Territories’ first homegrown Mineral Resources Act.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will run a public drop-in session in Behchokǫ̀ on September 26 at the Behchokǫ̀ Cultural Centre, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Delays Expected on Highways 1 and 2

Hay River (September 19, 2017) – The Department of Infrastructure would like to advise drivers that delays of an hour or more can be expected on Highways 1 and 2 on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. The delays are a result of a barge being transported from Edmonton to Hay River.

The shipment is expected to take one day and will travel along Highways 1 and 2 before travelling along Mackenzie Drive, 104 Street and 104 Avenue in Hay River.
