Free mental wellness subscription boxes for NWT youth

Today the Government of Northwest Territories will release its third free mental health and wellness subscription box to NWT youth. These boxes are being made available to youth and organizations serving youth as part of the My Voice My Choice Campaign for youth wellness. The box includes a variety of health and mental wellness resources, such as topic-specific materials, as well as individual and group activities such as colouring sheets and activity kits by northern-based artists.

There are five different subscription boxes, each with a unique theme:

GNWT approves seven projects under Greenhouse Gas Grant Program

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has approved seven projects under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Grant Program – including a project to install a Level 3 electric vehicle charger in Behchokǫ̀.

The GNWT is providing approximately $4.2 million in funding for these projects to support greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects and initiatives in NWT communities. The approved projects include:

New Rapid Tests Introduced to Combat Syphilis Outbreak

Northwest Territories health care practitioners are being trained to use new rapid tests for syphilis to curb a worsening outbreak of the sexually transmitted disease.

Syphilis rates in the territory increased 253 percent between Jan. 1, 2019, to April 1, 2022. During that time 222 cases were detected, 47 in the first three months of this year. Yellowknife continues to report the most cases, but the disease is spreading across the NWT, with cases having been reported in nearly every region of the territory.

Fire Ban Lifted for Yellowknife Parks

The fire ban in effect for the Fred Henne and Yellowknife River Territorial Parks is lifted.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reminds park users to remain cautious and follow all fire safety procedures.

Please use only approved fire pits; and ensure all fires are extinguished before leaving your campsite.

GNWT launches review of COVID-19 Response

Residents of the Northwest Territories are invited to participate in a review of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) response to the COVID-19 pandemic by providing their feedback through an online survey launched today.

Leadership from Indigenous governments and community governments, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Members of the NWT Executive Council, and senior GNWT officials will also be invited to participate in the review and provide their perspectives on the GNWT response through a separate survey tool.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation declared statutory holiday in Northwest Territories

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has amended the Employment Standards Act (Act) to add the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to the list of statutory holidays, to be observed on September 30 annually, beginning in 2022.

This holiday gives all Northwest Territories (NWT) residents an opportunity to acknowledge the territory’s colonial history and the legacy of residential schools.
