Hear the Beep, Save Your Life: Test Your Smoke Alarms on September 28

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) are calling on all residents to take part in Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Sunday, September 28, 2025. You can participate by testing smoke alarms in your home to make sure they are in good working condition.

The theme for Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, observed every year, is “Saved by the Beep.”

Housing NWT Releases Interim Update on Renewal Strategy

Housing NWT has released its second update on the progress of the Housing NWT Renewal Strategy. This marks an important step in its commitment to increasing access to affordable housing for Northwest Territories (NWT) residents and making more homes for Northerners.

Since the launch of its renewed mandate in 2022, Housing NWT has completed 31 of the 42 actions. Eight actions are still in progress, and three are ongoing. Housing NWT is pleased to report that all actions are expected to be completed during the 20th Legislative Assembly.

2024 Northwest Territories Forest Health Report highlights impacts of drought and decreased insect activity

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the 2024 Northwest Territories Forest Health Report. The report offers a comprehensive overview of forest health conditions throughout the territory. It highlights the significant impacts of prolonged drought and notes a general decline in forest insect and disease activity compared to previous years.

Premier R.J. Simpson marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

“On September 30, we honour the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children who were forced to attend residential schools, we remember the children who never made it home, and we recognize the strength of Survivors, their families, and their communities.

Nominations Now Open for the 2025 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is inviting nominations for the 2025 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards.

The GNWT launched the Northwest Territories (NWT) Outstanding Volunteer Awards program in 1991 to recognize the great contributions volunteers make to the quality of life in the NWT. 

Nominations are accepted in four categories: Youth (under 25), Individual (25-54), Elder (55+) and Group.

Drinking Water at Range Lake North School Deemed Safe

The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) has lifted the Health Order previously in place at Range Lake North School, following confirmation that lead levels in drinking water no longer exceed Health Canada guidelines.

All fountains and fixtures used for drinking water and food preparation have been replaced, and follow-up testing has confirmed overall water quality. Standard operating procedures are being developed to support ongoing maintenance — including filter replacement and routine re-testing — to ensure the water remains safe over time.
