YELLOWKNIFE (March 9, 2018) – Aurora College and the Department of Health and Social Services are hosting a seniors’ health fair in the Centre Square Mall as part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month on Tuesday, March 13, between 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

One of the more interesting displays at the fair will be a Giant Colon that is 20 feet in length. The public is invited to come see the Giant Colon and other displays being presented by first year nursing students and health department staff.

Mr. Speaker, in October 2014, I tabled in this House, Building Stronger Families: An Action Plan to Transform Child and Family Services. I am pleased to provide an update on our accomplishments on the action plan.

The goal of Building Stronger Families is to improve the quality of child and family services offered by our government, with a view to achieving better outcomes for children and families when they receive services under the Child and Family Services Act.

YELLOWKNIFE (February 27, 2018) — Residents in the Sahtu region of the Northwest Territories now have access to a glossary of cancer terms in various dialects of North Slavey to help them learn more about the disease and treatment options. 

Developed in partnership with the K’asho Got’ine Charter Community, the Tulita Dene Band, The Goba Group, and the Government of the Northwest Territories, this new language resource should improve how patients, family members and health officials speak about cancer in the region.

YELLOWKNIFE (February 26, 2018) – Across Canada, March is Nutrition Month, and this year, dietitians are helping Canadians realize the potential of food to improve health, fuel activities, and bring people together.

Almost half of all Canadians say that eating a healthy, balanced diet is challenging because they are so busy. They often skip meals, and close to 30 per cent of Canadians snack to keep fuelled in a busy day. Snacks, in healthy portions, can be part of a healthy eating plan.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to announce that the Government of Northwest Territories has signed a bilateral agreement with the federal government to invest new resources into mental health and addictions services, as well as home and community care.

This investment will provide approximately $6 million over the next five years, including $2.4 million for mental health and addictions services, and $3.6 million for home and community care services.

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories has made a commitment in its mandate to ensure that effective supports and programs are available for persons with disabilities.

In March 2016, our Government initiated the Disability Program Review and Renewal Project to identify the status of current services, gaps in services and opportunities for improvements through the development of a new strategic framework and five-year action plan. 

YELLOWKNIFE (February 20, 2018) — The Government of the Northwest Territories has released the Inventory of Programs and Services for Persons with Disabilities.

The inventory provides a list of programs and services available for persons with disabilities and their caregivers delivered by GNWT Departments, agencies, and partners. The inventory is a resource intended help persons with disabilities and their caregivers to maximize their use of the supports available in the NWT.
