Madam Speaker, making strategic infrastructure investments is a priority of 19th Legislative Assembly.

Given our vast Territory, airports are indeed strategic infrastructure to the North. Residents across the Territory depend on air travel for the movement of goods and people, medevacs, search and rescue operations, forest fire response, and much more. Our airports also contribute to the economic and social well-being of NWT residents.

GNWT releases report on potential impacts of COVID-19 on JK-12 education system

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released a report that provides insight into the ways the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected student success and the education system in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Since March 2020, there has been significant disruption to educational instruction around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

GNWT recognizes 2021-2022 Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Award Recipients

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to congratulate the 2021-2022 Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification award recipients. The annual awards recognize: Top Graduating Apprentice Award, Top Interprovincial Red Seal Mark Award, Top Mark Recipients and Certified Journeypersons.

Across Canada, October 30 to November 5 is National Skilled Trade and Technology Week. The week raises awareness of the many career opportunities in skilled trade and technology in the Northwest Territories (NWT) and Canada.

Madam Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories stands with the Government of Canada and provincial and territorial governments against harassment, abuse, and unethical behaviour in sport. By being a signatory to the 2019 Red Deer Declaration for the Prevention of Harassment, Abuse and Discrimination in Sport, we commit to do our part to ensure a Safe Sport environment for all participants in the Northwest Territories.

GNWT Releases 2021-2022 Reports on Climate Action

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released updated strategies guiding climate action in the Northwest Territories (NWT), including reports on its successes to date.

The strategies include the Climate Change Action Plan, the 2030 Energy Strategy and Action Plan, and the NWT Carbon Tax Initiative.

Broadly, this work seeks to address four priority areas for action:

Mr. Speaker, climate change is one of the most complex and far-reaching issues facing the Northwest Territories today. Despite being responsible for less than 0.2% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions, the Northwest Territories is experiencing rates of climate warming up to four times faster than the rest of Canada. This affects all aspects of our way of life. It is a serious threat to the economy, and to the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental health and wellness of residents.

Caroline Wawzonek: Collaborating on Benefit Retention Opportunities and Approaches

The Government of the Northwest Territories has a responsibility to ensure benefits from the extraction of NWT natural resources are provided to residents of the NWT.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment has three initiatives that are advancing the priority set by the 19th Legislative Assembly to advance a benefit retention approach to economic development in the NWT.

Have your say on Regional Economic Development Planning

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is engaging NWT residents online and in person to inform the development of Economic Development Plans (REDPs) for each region.

NWT residents are invited to complete a public survey on the GNWT’s Have Your Say engagement platform where they will find a discussion paper as well as economic profiles and data for their respective regions.  The deadline to provide input is January 31, 2023.
