GNWT releases NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework

Minister Responsible for Seniors, Julie Green, released the NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework today. The Strategic Framework provides a foundation for improving programs, services, and initiatives for seniors to better meet their needs.

The development of the NWT Seniors’ Strategic Framework involved a comprehensive process, including  a literature review, analysis of statistical data and engagement with seniors, their caregivers and families, non-government organizations, as well as community and Indigenous Governments.

GNWT adds eLearning modules to its Campaign School for Women to remove barriers for female political participation

The Gender Equity Division of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has recently introduced a suite of eLearning modules on the SheCanNWT website, designed to support the existing resources of the Campaign School for Women. It is the first of its kind across the territories.

GNWT introduces Commercial Fishery Support Pilot Program to assist fishers in the Northwest Territories

The Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) new Commercial Fishery Support Pilot Program (CFSP) is now accepting applications. This funding program is part of the GNWT’s ongoing strategy to support Northwest Territories (NWT) fishers and to revitalize the territory’s commercial fishery by helping to defer costs, supplement prices, and encourage recruitment and innovation.

Progress Update on the Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan

The Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan is producing results since it was released in February this year. The Work Plan identifies 24 action items to continue the work of building a strong continuum of coordinated and easily accessible addictions supports for residents. It responds to recommendations by the Auditor General of Canada delivered in 2022.

To date 29% of the action items in the Work Plan have been completed.

Improvements to arts project funding for artists, craftspeople, and arts organizations

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is making changes to its arts project and arts operational funding to better support the arts sector, especially artists and craftspeople in small communities, and arts organizations.

These changes apply to arts funding programs administered by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, but funding and marketing programs provided by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment that support economic development will not change

GNWT releases 2021-22 report on state of JK-12 education system

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) Education System Performance Measures Technical Report for 2021-22.

This is an annual report on the state of the Northwest Territories (NWT) education system. It provides crucial data to help the GNWT and education bodies address students’ needs, and ensure we’re providing the supports and resources needed for students to thrive.

Flight Pre-Registration Now Available for Dettah, Ndilǫ, Yellowknife and Ingraham Trail Evacuee Re-entry

To help evacuees of Dettah, Ndilǫ, Yellowknife and the Ingraham Trail prepare to return home, pre-registration for Yellowknife re-entry flights is now available both online and over the phone.

Pre-registration is the first step in developing passenger lists for re-entry flights. From there, appropriate aircraft will be booked based on need in established flight hubs. Pending evacuation orders being downgraded to an evacuation alert, flights will depart as early as Wednesday, September 6 and continue for an estimated five days.

GNWT’s Disaster Assistance Policy to be applied in NWT communities and surrounding areas

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will be applying the Disaster Assistance Policy (DAP) for communities and surrounding areas in the Northwest Territories where widespread property or infrastructure damage has been experienced and recovery efforts are required. Specifically, these communities include: Behchokǫ̀; Enterprise; Fort Smith; Hay River; Kátł’odeeche First Nation; Yellowknife and Ndılǫ, potentially including the Ingraham Trail; Dettah; Jean Marie River; Kakisa; Wekweètı̀; and Sambaa k’e. 

GNWT Announces Funding for Evacuees and Small Businesses

Today, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is announcing funding for residents who self-evacuated by road and for small businesses affected by evacuation orders in the territory.

The Evacuation Travel Support Program is available to NWT residents who, by order, evacuated their home community because of the 2023 wildfires. Eligible individuals who evacuated by vehicle will be provided with a one-time direct deposit as follows:
