New Judge Appointed to Territorial Court

Minister of Justice R.J. Simpson announced today the judicial appointment of Mr. Gary Magee to the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories. This appointment will be effective January 17, 2024.

Mr. Magee holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia and a Masters in Constitutional Law from Osgoode Hall, York University. 

He has practiced law for 19 years and has spent the majority of his legal career living and working in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He has a broad range of experience covering criminal, family, and civil law.

Premier Simpson announces appointment of Principal Secretary

Premier R.J. Simpson has announced that Dr. Joe Dragon has been appointed Principal Secretary, effective December 11, 2023.

Born in Fort Smith and a Smith’s Landing First Nation member, Dr. Dragon joins the Premier’s Office after a distinguished 28-year career in territorial and federal public service. In addition to several senior leadership roles with the federal government, Dr. Dragon has served as the Deputy Minister of the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources and Infrastructure.

Changes coming to delivery of Child and Youth Counselling (CYC) services

Child and Youth Counselling (CYC) services have been revamped this school year to improve supports for students, youth and families in Northwest Territories (NWT) schools and communities. While students and families may see changes during the 2023-24 school year as the CYC service model changes, mental health services will still be available in schools and communities during this time. 

GNWT Announces Name for the Legacy Stanton Building

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) announced today that it has renamed the Legacy Stanton Building as the łıwegǫ̀atì (kle-wa-goon-tea) Building. This is the traditional Wılı̀ı̀deh yatı name for Frame Lake.

Between December 2022 and February 2023, the GNWT asked residents to submit their suggestions. The criteria included consideration for names that reflect the historical, cultural, and geographic significance of the NWT and to names that honour deceased persons who have made significant contributions to public life.

New Vendor Performance Management policy to hold vendors accountable

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has introduced a new Vendor Performance Management Policy to help monitor performance and ensure that vendors fulfill their commitments to use NWT and local goods, services and labor when they are awarded government contracts.

 

The policy allows the GNWT to assess and monitor vendor performance. This will lead to several benefits, including:

 

Developer’s Assessment Report submitted to advance Mackenzie Valley Highway project

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has submitted the Developer’s Assessment Report for the Mackenzie Valley Highway Project to the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board (MVEIRB). The submission is a significant milestone in the Environmental Assessment (EA) process for this strategic infrastructure project and meets the Mandate commitment to advance the development of the Mackenzie Valley Highway.
