GNWT honours public servants with annual Premier's Awards

The 2021-2022 Premier’s Awards for Excellence were presented in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly on June 24, 2022.

The Government of the Northwest Territories’ annual Premier’s Award for Excellence program recognizes the outstanding achievement of individual employees who continue to strive for excellence and improvements in the workplace.

This year honours were presented in three separate categories.

NWT and Nunavut leaders continue collaboration on Barren-ground caribou management

Nunavut’s Minister of Environment David Akeeagok and the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) for the Northwest Territories, Shane Thompson hosted a meeting on barren-ground caribou management on June 16, 2022.

They were joined by Nunavut co-management partners from Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Ekaluktutiak Hunters & Trappers Organization and Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association. Also attending from the NWT were representatives from the Tłı̨chǫ Government, Northwest Territory Métis Nation and North Slave Métis Alliance.

ECE announces inductees to 2021-22 NWT Education Hall of Fame

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) is pleased to announce the inductees of the 2021 and 2022 Northwest Territories (NWT) Education Hall of Fame.

The GNWT is recognizing eight deserving individuals who have provided exemplary service to education in the territory. Each have made a strong and lasting impression on their colleagues, students and communities across the NWT.

The 2021 inductees are:

Aurora College Transformation Quarterly Report Highlights Site Selection Criteria and What’s Next

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released the fifth Quarterly Report on the Aurora College Transformation today. The release of quarterly reports supports the GNWT’s efforts to be transparent and accountable throughout the transformation process, while also aiming to enhance NWT resident and stakeholder understanding of what the polytechnic university can mean to residents, to communities and to the territory.

The June Quarterly Report highlights completed and forthcoming activities for the Aurora College Transformation in Phase 2. This includes:

GNWT allocates $1.7 million to monitoring and research projects focused on Indigenous knowledge and science

The Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP) is providing $1.7 million in 2022-23 to support 29 monitoring and research projects. Funding recipients include Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, universities, and territorial and federal government departments.

This year, approximately $1.2 million is being provided for ongoing projects and approximately $500,000 is being provided for eight new projects.

GNWT agrees to sell Mactung property to Fireweed Zinc Ltd.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has accepted a letter of offer from Fireweed Zinc Ltd. (Fireweed) to acquire its Mactung property.

The GNWT took ownership of Mactung in 2015 as part of the insolvency of North American Tungsten Corporation Limited in order to protect the economic value of the property’s tungsten deposit for future development. 

The GNWT’s goal has always been to return the property to the private sector once its commodity value recovered.
