GNWT allocates $1.7 million to monitoring and research projects focused on Indigenous knowledge and science

The Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP) is providing $1.7 million in 2022-23 to support 29 monitoring and research projects. Funding recipients include Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, universities, and territorial and federal government departments.

This year, approximately $1.2 million is being provided for ongoing projects and approximately $500,000 is being provided for eight new projects.

GNWT agrees to sell Mactung property to Fireweed Zinc Ltd.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has accepted a letter of offer from Fireweed Zinc Ltd. (Fireweed) to acquire its Mactung property.

The GNWT took ownership of Mactung in 2015 as part of the insolvency of North American Tungsten Corporation Limited in order to protect the economic value of the property’s tungsten deposit for future development. 

The GNWT’s goal has always been to return the property to the private sector once its commodity value recovered.

GNWT Adopts Statement of Environmental Values

The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Shane Thompson, is pleased to announce that the Government of the Northwest Territories has adopted a Statement of Environmental Values. This is an important step in addressing a mandate commitment of the 19th Legislative Assembly, which is to ensure climate change impacts are specifically considered when making government decisions. The NWT is the second jurisdiction in Canada to take such a step.

New board of Yellowknife Airport Economic Advisory Committee to hold inaugural meeting

The Yellowknife Airport Economic Advisory Committee (EAC) will be holding the first meeting of its new board later today.

The committee, established in January 2017, provides non-binding strategic advice and recommendations about Yellowknife Airport related issues to airport management, Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) senior management and the Minister of Infrastructure.

Minister of Health and Social Services announces release of 2021-2024 Human Resources Plan

Today, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green, released a long-range human resources plan to address challenges to the recruitment and retention of health and social services staff across the territory.

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services System Human Resources Plan 2021-2024 outlines actions to further the 19th Assembly’s mandate priority to increase the number of resident health-care professionals in the NWT. It also includes strategies to address existing staff shortages throughout the system.
