Mr. Speaker, I rise today to speak about the recent Housing Symposium that was hosted by the NWT Housing Forum on January 22nd and 23rd in Yellowknife. This year’s symposium marked the first in-person gathering since the Forum began in 2023. Over the course of two days, we engaged in important discussions, shared innovative ideas, and strengthened our partnerships.

Le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest s’est engagé à verser 445 000 $ par an dans le cadre d’un nouveau partenariat à Hay River offrant de l’aide qui change la vie des résidents vulnérables. Depuis le 1er octobre 2024, la section locale 51 des Métis de Hay River et de la région a pris en charge avec succès l’exploitation du refuge pour sans-abri de Hay River. Grâce au financement et au soutien à la formation fournis par le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO), le refuge continue de fournir des services d’urgence essentiels aux personnes dans le besoin.

Lucy Kuptana, ministre responsable d’Habitation TNO, a fait la déclaration suivante pour souligner la Journée nationale de l’habitation :
« Aujourd’hui, à l’occasion de la Journée nationale de l’habitation, je souhaite revenir sur les progrès réalisés par le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest pour répondre aux besoins des Ténois en matière de logement. Mr. Speaker, residents have noticed a significant increase in illegal activities across the territory and within public housing.
In particular, there has been an increase in drug use and sales. I am concerned that this behaviour is a risk to public safety, especially to Elders and children in our communities. Local Housing Organizations are actively looking for ways to address and report drug use and sales in public housing by working with the RCMP, the Rental Office, and residents.

Mr. Speaker, I want to talk about an issue that is important to the maintenance of the public housing stock. I am speaking about the damage to public housing units and the costs to Local Housing Organizations and Housing NWT. I want to highlight how this damage impacts the workplan of Local Housing Organizations and Housing NWT.
