GNWT receives Aa2 credit rating from Moody’s Investor Services

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has received an Aa2 (stable) credit rating from Moody’s Investors Service.

The Aa2 rating is the third highest rating available from Moody’s, slightly lower than the Aa1 (negative), which was Moody’s previous rating for the GNWT. The rating was lowered to reflect that continued economic pressures and the unlikelihood of an economic rebound to pre-pandemic levels for at least 2 to 3 years will make mitigating the growth in debt more challenging.

Public Health Emergency Extended Through March 29

Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green has extended the territory-wide Public Health Emergency under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola, effective March 16, 2022.

The latest extension continues through March 29, 2022.

The Public Health Emergency is required to continue to decisively respond to shifts in the NWT’s own public health situation, and maintain preventative measures.

Diane Archie: Airport Capital Assistance Program

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, NWT airports are critical to the economic and social well-being of NWT residents. They help to connect communities and families throughout the territory and across the country. Today I am pleased to give you an update on two projects which have been funded by the Government of Canada’s Airport Capital Assistance Program. These projects are very important to the Department of Infrastructure and to residents as they will help to improve safety at NWT airports.

Red Cross opens online portal for donations from the NWT

Northwest Territories residents can now donate to the humanitarian effort in Ukraine through the recently-launched Red Cross portal.

Premier Caroline Cochrane delivered a statement in the Legislative Assembly on February 25 on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and committed the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to match donations to the Red Cross from NWT residents up to $50,000.

Julie Green: Strengthening Mental Wellness and Addiction Recovery

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, mental health and addictions continues to be a serious issue in the NWT, which is why this government has committed to increasing the number and variety of culturally respectful, community-based, mental health and addictions programs, including aftercare. I rise today to update Members on the work to meet this mandate commitment.

Shane Thompson: Harvest with Respect

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, as the weather warms, we are seeing more hunters heading out on the land, including many who are traveling up the winter road to harvest caribou. Most are harvesting safely, respectfully, and following traditional practices.

Unfortunately, a few hunters’ illegal and disrespectful harvesting puts unnecessary pressure on barren-ground caribou herds. These herds are already facing challenges related to the changing climate which can impact their habitat and food sources.
