Prospector Training to Launch In Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 7, 2018) — With licences, tags, and tools in-hand, aspiring prospectors will soon be striking out on-the-land and learning to stake claims.

A two day Introduction to Prospecting course is being offered to residents of Yellowknife, Dettah and Ndilǫ from June 23-24, 2018.

The NWT Geological Survey and Mining Recorders Office - divisions of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment - are partnering with the Mine Training Society, TerraX Minerals, and the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines to deliver the programming. 

More Explorers than Ever Vie for Mining Incentive Program Funds

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 7, 2018) — The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is investing another $1 million in the future of mineral exploration in the NWT. Eighteen projects will benefit this year from funding provided under the Mining Incentive Program (MIP).

The program, now in its fourth year, invests in qualifying prospecting and exploration projects across the NWT to advance mineral exploration. It is administered by the NWT Geological Survey, a division of the GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

Cannabis Prohibition Options and Timelines

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has recently passed Bill 6: Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Implementation Act, which legalizes the sale and use of cannabis in the NWT. 

Part 4 of the Northwest Territories’ Cannabis Product Act provides NWT community governments with an option to hold a local plebiscite to decide whether to prohibit or restrict cannabis sales and distribution within community boundaries.  This option is similar to the option that exists for restricting liquor.

NWT Takes Home Award for Sustainable Diamond Industry

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (June 1, 2018)The Northwest Territories was recognized last night as a world-leading jurisdiction for responsible mining.

In his acceptance of a Diamonds Do Good Award from the World Diamond Empowerment Fund, Premier Bob McLeod credited the partnership that has evolved between industry and public and Indigenous governments to advance the socially and environmentally-conscious management of mining in the NWT.

GNWT Signs Lease Agreement for Redeveloped Existing Stanton Hospital

YELLOWKNIFE (May 31, 2018) – With the new Stanton Hospital now more than 75 per cent complete, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has signed a lease agreement with Stanton Ventura Inc. to accommodate tenants in the redeveloped existing Stanton Hospital.

Summer highway construction projects announced across the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (May 31, 2018) — With summer fast approaching, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is preparing for several highway and bridge construction projects across the North and wants to make sure Northwest Territories residents and visitors are kept well informed.

These construction projects are part of the GNWT’s efforts to follow through on its mandate commitment to invest in strategic transportation infrastructure across the Northwest Territories. 

GNWT launches new online spill reporting and tracking tool

YELLOWKNIFE (May 25, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories is pleased to announce the launch of its new online spill reporting and tracking system.

The modernized system is designed specifically for companies and organizations, which due to the nature of their work have a higher volume of spills, to report spills online. Members of the public will still be able to notify the 24-Hour Spill Report Line through facsimile, email or phone. 

Government of the Northwest Territories and Northwest Territories RCMP team up for National Road Safety Week

YELLOWKNIFE (May 25, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) partnered with the Northwest Territories Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) from May 15 to May 21, 2018 to support National Road Safety Week. 

National Road Safety Week is an annual awareness campaign organized by the Canada Safety Council that focuses on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.

Made-In-NWT Training Program to Meet NWT Industry Needs

YELLOWKNIFE (MAY 24, 2018) — The first-ever Geoscience Field Assistant Training Program began last week in Yellowknife.

Eight participants, supported by eight employer sponsors have signed on to take the five-week, classroom-based course, to be followed by 160 hours of on-the-job training.  The Mine Training Society will offer wage subsidies of $21/hour to employers for the on-the-ground portion.
